ISPs distributing Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox

Postby Andrew T. » Wed 25 Aug, 2004 9:01 pm

I thought it might be interesting to ask:

Currently, do any ISPs routinely distribute Netscape 7.x, Mozilla, or Mozilla Firefox to their subscribers, either alone or together with Microsoft Internet Explorer?

They will not support Netscape of Mozilla.
They only support I.E.
I use other browsers anyway. :) :)

My ISP used to do that for Netscape Communicator 4.7x, but now expects all users to have and use IE. They implied that pushing a different browser would be a problem for their customers. They also told me that they no longer try to have their website display well in both IE and Netscape.

Same here. I was originally set up with NS4.51, and when NS6.x came out this support disappeared. It does not mean that individuals can't use other browsers. I was given as reason that they would not be able to train their techs, fast enough, to keep up with the changes in Netscape.
However, I found, off the record, that some techs were willing and to help, but only if Outlook Express was used first. Mail seems to have been the biggest hangup.

My ISP gives you ether a special build of IE or NS. They let you use any browser available. And it's not changed since I started to use their ISP

When we first had dial-up internet back around 1997 or 1998, the ISP included Netscape 4.x on the set up disk. When we got a cable modem last year, it came with IE 6, but it wasen't required for use.

When I got my cable modem setup, the welcome said the registration required IE5.5+. The ntl
broadband installation technician who did the installation just couldn't work out why IE wasn't
working on my PC. I didn't tell him I'd disabled it. I suggested using Netscape 7.0 (as that was
the version of NS that was out at the time) to do the online registration instead of using IE.

He said "we don't support browser other than IE5+ or Netscape 4.x". He was surprised to see
that NS7.0 worked absolutely flawlessly to register my cable modem with the main ntl server!

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I hate people that when they say NS or Mac's are bad. That's just tech FUD

Now that Mozilla-based browsers are clearly increasing in popularity, will it only be a matter of time before ISPs begin to support, promote, and distribute Netscape (or Mozilla/Firefox) once again?
