Pop up said serious problems with 3.0 and later. Any info. Should I upgrade?

Winamp3 was a entirely seperate product relaace, built on different code than Winamp 2.x and 5.x. Wianmp3 was considered a rushed product, while Winamp 2 and Winamp 5 are much more stable. Winamp 5 still uses the 2.x code, but ads the "Modern" skinning engine from Winamp3(Winamp 2.x"Classic skins" and be still used), also new to Winamp 5 is CD Ripping and Burinig, along with a new media libaray. Winamp 5 should be more stable and faster than Winamp3.

Not fully true. Winamp 5 was based on Winamp 2, but with the advanced skinning abilities of Winamp3. I never saw a problem with Winamp 3, it always ran nice and fast and very stable on a PC with Windows 2000 or XP, and a 1Ghz+ processor with plenty of memory.

I tried to send to send you a detailed message, about two hours ago, but it would not send, and I lost it. This happens at this site, once in a while.
Anyway you refer to a Popup. From whom and where did you see it?
I am sure that with every software some people will have have problems with any kind of software, about something which is never encountered by the majority.
I can say that about Winamp5.05. While it is true that it does more than earlier versions, it has, for me a problem which is annoying enough to remove it, till I figure it out.
If I try to play a playlist file, from Windows Media Player, which I disabled, it will come up, by-passing the default player, and then do nothing. This is with .asx, wax, and .wmx files. And, these files are listed in windows File Types as Winamp Media files. Sure...
Otherwise it is a good player for audio and video files. It is definitely easier with work with than the earlier Winamps, which required pinpoint accuracy to clck on.

There was a security hole in regards to Winamp 3 in regards to the execution of skins.

This is a good reason to upgrade.

Normally, I wouldn't advise an upgrade unless your favorite codecs are improved or any new features are present.

But . . . what if you're still running Winamp v2.9.x and reluctant to upgrade to v5.0.x . . . ?

Winamp 5.0x is Winamp 2.9x with secutity and bug fixes plus extra features(modern skinning, media libaray, CD ripping and burinig). Winamp 5.0x will allow you to use Winamp 2.x and Winamp3 skins, along with Winamp 2.x plugins. If you run Winamp 5.0x with classic skins it will behave preform and exactly as Winamp 2.9x did. I think it is worth the upgrade from Winamp 2.9x to Winamp 5.0x.

Personally, I am quite happy with version 2.10. I have never had any reason to upgrade, since it does precisely what I need it to do: play mp3s.

There is no reason to upgrade if you use Winamp for mp3 file only. But it can do more, in WinXP, alt least, and the darned thing gets quite confused. I am going to reinstall Winamp, but will have to enable Windows Media Player to make it behave.
Follow up: I reinstalled Winamp 5.05, and I notice something which I had not seen before, i.e. Wnamp.com audio and video files. This expands the "stations". As for setting file associations, it is almost hopeless. I will have to start from scratch.

Thanks - in answer - have Winamp2.8, Win ME - my midi files

Postby Topgrandma » Thu 09 Sep, 2004 5:25 pm

play in Winamp as do many other things. Should I just stick to the 2.8 and
not upgrade at this point? Also - haven't upgraded the Windows Media player
as there is some type of conflict with the reverting drive that I - a novice - can't really understand. Any suggestions?

I reinstalled Winamp, and everything works well. As for WMP, it depends on what you want to do with it, and which version you have now.
If you are not, seriously, into music, don't do a thing.
