In the last 48 hours I am unable to connect to my Wide Open West (WOW) server via the e-mail program with the Netscape Browser or with MS Outlook, which I don't like using anyway. I called WOW and they told me to uninstall my firewall, which I did, but both programs still refuse to connect to the server. They verified with me that all settings are correct and should be connecting in both e-mail programs.

On the phone the WOW tech said it could be a problem with my 110 port, but that seems really weird since it worked fine Saturday night and wouldn't work on Sunday.

Any help anyone can give will be much appreciated!

What kind of firewall did you have?
Something is really wrong if two different programs fail to work. There are many possibilities, but look at this
Something seems to be blocking port 110, which is for incoming mail.
Are you using a router, by any chance? Try to remember when the problem first sgowed up.

Norton Antivirus

I had Zone Alarm on it as a Firewall but I uninstalled then used Norton's Clean Sweep to get all the remnants of it out of my registry.

I've never had Norton Systemworks on the computer as did the person in your example. I had BIG problems with McAfee Virus protection and removed it about 9 months ago. At that time I switched to Norton's. Could that antivirus program be the problem?

I was poking around in the forum and found a post by Ramona answering a similar question. She said to be sure that Norton AV wasn't set to scan e-mail.

Heck, I thought, I turned that off long ago!

But I checked it anway and though I don't know how, it was turned back on.

I turned it off again and....
Problem solved!!!

Norton, in one form or other creates problems with a number of programs. My computer came with Norton AV, and three free months, and I promptly uninstalled it.
McAfee had been a pain for a few years, primarily slowing down the System. I could live with it, but AV Grisoft is fine, and free.

Tell me about this AV program. I have a laptop that my Norton's just expired on and this sounds like a program I'd love to have!

It is free, and it has automatic updates, but I check daily. You will get a key to get it going. They never bothered me with newsletters or anything.
It will not scan Netscape Mail, but it has an Outlook Express and Eudora plugin.
I have used it, exclusively, in WinXP, and for about two years, in conjunction with McAfee AV. I recommend it.

I'm going to download it this weekend and install it on my laptop, since my Norton's AV subscription has run out on that one. Is there any trick to uninstalling Norton's AV? I know McAfee is a royal PAIN to uninstall!!!

You do know that you can just download the updates for Norton AV from Symantec's website? If your subscription has run out, that just means that the Liveupdate will no longer work. You can download the updates from this page.
