CherryOS, another PPC emulator for the x86 PC

Postby Andrew T. » Tue 12 Oct, 2004 10:16 pm

MXS has released CherryOS, PowerPC emulation software that runs on x86-based PCs. Its virtual machine thus enables PC users to run the Mac OS and compatible applications, opposite to how Microsoft's popular VirtualPC software allows Mac users to run Windows and other operating systems and applications written for the PC on their systems.

As a PPC emulator, it may be inevitable to compare CherryOS to PearPC, the open-source emulator of similar purpose. This new emulator claims to offer full network support and access to all of a PC's resources. It is available as a $49.99 US download.

It would be interesting to hear feedback from individuals who have acquired and tested this software. I'm perfectly happy with a real Mac myself.

It's only a matter of time before one (or both) of the following things happen:

 Since it costs US$50 to get CherryOS, it'll end up being fileshared on P2P.
 Apple takes legal action. Cease and Desist order, or full blown litigation?

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

If you read Slahdot, you'll know that this software is merely a ripoff of PearPC.. incorporating the majority of it's source code.

CherryOS "on hold"

Postby Andrew T. » Tue 05 Apr, 2005 6:04 pm

To make a long story short...

Shortly after it was released, numerous allegations surfaced that CherryOS was nothing more than a dubious, commerically-sold repackaging of PearPC itself. Some individuals have posted striking examples of how similar the code of CherryOS and PearPC is to each other. According to MacWorld:
One blog noted that there were PearPC graphics embedded inside the CherryOS executable. They also noted that if you put "the PearPC executable into the same folder as CherryOS.exe and run a program to run a comparison of the code, and you start finding all kinds of code matches, string matches (think english sentences), etc."

Now, the following statement is the only thing visible on the CherryOS website:

"CherryOS is On Hold - until further notice."

Thanks for the heads up. I remember I read somewhere before, the guys from CherryOS claimed that CherryOS did not take any of the other codes.
