"failed to connect..."

Postby kah707 » Fri 15 Oct, 2004 10:43 pm

Just built new computer with xandros os. Installed Mozilla Debian Package 1.6.x.1-10. Trying to transfer information from netscape 7.2 mail to new computer so can access mail at xxxx@netscape.net.

Used imap.mail.netcenter.com port 143 for server
Used smtp.netscape.net port 25 for outgoing server

both settings are what were used for netscape 7.2.

I have the old and the new computers side by side and all the info is the same, user names, account name, email address.

I get the following message when trying to get mail:

"failed to connect to server imap.mail.netcenter.com"

at the bottom of the window, it says "resolving host imap.mail.netcenter.com"

Any suggestions?

TIA

Kevin

You can't access Netscape Webmail with Mozilla. Webmail mocks an IMAP server in Netscape 6+, but it still uses an irregular protocol to send/receive mail, which Mozilla does not support.

Answer to Your Problem

Postby hydrastark » Sat 29 Jan, 2005 2:07 pm

I have an answer for you but it's not pretty. Apparently, Netscape has become a total hand puppet for AOL.

They are tinkering with their DNS. These directions will resolve your problem temporarily, but in order to get a permanent resolution, you should complain loudly to Netscape at hostmaster@aol.com, hostmaster@netscape.net, and domains@aol.net.

For Windows 2000

Your file path is most likely C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc

For Windows XP

Your file path is most likely C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Instructions:
1) Go to www.dnsstuff.com
2) At the top right is a box that says "DNS lookup"
3) Put in the following host name "ns.netscape.com". For complex technical reasons I won't go into here, this is what imap.mail.netcenter.com actually maps out to.
4) Get back an IP address
5) Go to your file path and look for a file called "hosts"
6) Double click it and select "Open With" and choose word pad.
7) Make the following entry - the IP address you got from ns.netscape.com, tab over, and then "imap.mail.netcenter.com".
8) Save the file and close it
9) If you have any netscape windows open, close them.
10) now open your mail program, send another nasty gram to the email addresses listed at the top, and you should be able to get email UNTIL they change the IP address again, in which case start at step 1.

Hope that helps everyone out,

Unable to connect to server

Postby jamdam » Sat 16 Apr, 2005 5:39 am

THANKS A MILLION... For 2 full weeks I thought I would go crazy.. I tried a fix suggested in another link, which suggested something to do with the DNS, but that didn't work.
Every other fix proposed was complicated, so luckily after 6 hours of research tonight, simply removing the profile created initially and then following something proposed by ramona, all my mail came thru. At the point where I was registering my screename, I cancelled when it was connecting. This is after inputing date of birth etc. then clicked next, then next, then finish. AND KABOOM... All mail went through.
Hurrah guys.

Again, after redoing the profile setup follow this:

I don't know about that error but,
Here is the workaround I used for the "Mailbox Creation Failed" error when setting up an existing webmail account in Netscape 7.x mail, FWIW

From a MAIL window, go to Edit > Mail&newsgroup Account Settings.
Click on Add Account > Netscape Webmail account > "I have an existing account".

Enter the screenname and password for the existing netscape.net account under "Current Member sign-in". The Netscape Mail Setup window should appear, asking for the name you want to appear in the "from" field.

After typing in your name, click the Next button, and wait a few seconds after the "connecting to server" message appears, then click "Cancel". Then click "Next", then "Finish" and the Netscape Webmail account will be set up in Netscape 7.x Mail.

Hi jamdam,

I'm guessing you wanted to give a "thanks" to this forum for a solution you found by searching through previous topics? I'm glad you found an answer to what must have been a very frustrating problem.

I can't believe the "Mailbox creation failed" problem in Netscape.net accounts has never been fixed. It's been around for ages, and similar directions have been given here and in other forums... For the record, it looks like the exact directions you quoted were taken from this post:
