Mozilla 1.8 Alpha 5 has been released.

MozillaZine wrote:Mozilla 1.8 Alpha 5 has been released, after a short freeze period. This latest alpha version of the Mozilla Application Suite features around 600 bug fixes. The Mozilla 1.8a5 Release Notes have more details; there's no What's New section yet but a rough changelog of 1.8a5 fixes is available. The milestone schedule diagram of the Mozilla Roadmap shows how this latest version fits in with other recent releases such as Mozilla Firefox 1.0. As the Aviary branch (from which Firefox 1.0 was built and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 will be released) forked from the 1.7 branch some time ago, those following the standalone products may be surprised by the amount of progress that has been made on the trunk, particularly with regards to Gecko, which is undergoing significant changes at the moment.

Mozilla 1.8 Alpha 5 can be downloaded from the mozilla1.8a5 directory on ftp.mozilla.org. As previously reported, the Mozilla Foundation intends to continue issuing new alphas of Mozilla 1.8 until the 1.0 versions of both Firefox and Thunderbird have shipped or they run out of natural numbers. This means that a 1.8 Alpha 6 is on the way. The final release of Mozilla 1.8 is scheduled for February 2005, with a 1.8-based Firefox 1.1 set for March.

DL into seperate folder

Postby jsjag » Sun 28 Nov, 2004 1:48 pm

If I want to demo 1.8 can I just D/L it to a different folder other than the default folder that the installer will choose?

If I have problems with 1.8 I want the ability to uninstall it ans stay with 1.7.3.

Yes, you can install Mozilla 1.8 Alpha 5 alongside an earlier version if you choose to place it in a folder other than that Mozilla 1.7.3 is installed in.

Also, when running more than one Mozilla release, it is important to use the Profile Manager to set up and use a different profile for each software version.

1.8 Alpha 5 working well

Postby jsjag » Tue 30 Nov, 2004 8:08 am

I've been giving 1.8 Alpha 5 a good run in and can report no real problems. There is one little bit that I'm sure will get attention. That bit is when I open the "file bookmark" window I always need to manually maximize the window. If I don't the window is about 1/4 the size it should be and you can't get to any radio buttons. I think that web pages render a bit faster than 1.7.3? Or it could just be my wish / imagination. :D

I have had no problem, other than a number of extention which worked in 1.8a4, are not working in 1.8a5. That's bad!

I guess you meant "that's not bad?" Over all, for an alpha, it is a very stable build. :D
