Configuring Firefox to work with....

Postby James » Mon 10 Jan, 2005 12:02 pm

My son has Windows XP as his operating system with Firefox his browser. He uses Norton's Clean Sweep and would like to configure it. Here's what he asked:

"I want to configure my Norton Clean Sweep to monitor Firefox. Clean sweep will erase the cookies and the cache, much the same as you can do in the options portion of Firefox. However, I like the setup of Clean sweep much more and it offers me a sense of security because I have used it for so long. My only problem in my search is although Norton offers a very good product their support is so-so for these types of issues. I have a feeling that Norton will only recognize IE as a browser. Is this true?"

I'd appreciate any information you can give. Thanks.

You posted at another newsgroup, word for word. I will summarize what I feel for others. I don't think that Clean Sweep is needed for something like removing cookies or cache. But, on the other hand, if one does not get into a mind frame to do it on a regular basis, it may be necessary. I set cookies lifetime for the session, and clear the disk Cache from the Prefbar.
I don't think that the action would be limited to IE. If it is, Clean Sweep is worthless. I can scan with Spybot S & D, which reports all cookies as spyware, and I had a few from IE, which I, rarely, use, and cookies from NS7.2, Mozilla1.7.5, and a few assorted programs.
According to zdnet.com, the 2002 version was doing an excellent job, with the caveat that it may delete data files.

Clean Sweep, in the past, did seem useful, but, for the last few versions, Clean Sweep has been useless to me. My most recent experience (although I could be mistaken) was that Clean Sweep does not touch Mozilla or Firefox products. I no longer install the Clean Sweep portion of Norton SystemWorks which I still install and use under Windows XP. I believe that Norton, at one time, considered removing Clean Sweep from its products since so much of what it does is done better by Windows XP.

Thank you, both. I'll pass this information on to my son.
