Netscape 8 Beta available to public

The above page from Netscape Browser central says the download will be available between 8 and 9 a.m. Thursday morning EST. Is that all? I sure would like to try it, but wouldn't be able too until after work.

It could also mean Netscape 8 would be available sometime starting between 8 and 9am

I am at work and ryunning Win98se, so far no issues. Rendering is quick, good job Newtscape team.

How do you get the Google search bar to be default search engine?

I do no want to use Netscape search, let me know ok.

Here is what I posted in the Netscape 8 pre-Beta thread
http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6784 includes information on adding additional searchplugins to Netscape 7.2 - Users can copy over the searchplugins (gif or png and .src) from other browsers' "searchplugins" folder or they can go to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ and install from there. I figured I'd try adding additional searchplugins to the new Netscape Browser.

I found a searchplugins folder in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\defaults\profile\searchplugins and it contains only NetscapeSearch.gif and .src files. The same Searchplugins are also shown in the profile:
C:\Documents and Settings\Alice\Application Data\Netscape\NSAE\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\searchplugins folder.

I tried installing a couple of new searchplugins from http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ in the new Netscape Browser but it wouldn't work... it didn't install anything. So, I had a bunch of saved searchplugins (.gif or .png and .src file pairs) from Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape 7.2, etc so I added some additional searchplugins to the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\defaults\searchplugins folder to test, then checked in View > My Sidebar > Search, but still, only Netscape was available.

So, I added the additional searchplugins to the profile:
C:\Documents and Settings\Alice\Application
Data\Netscape\NSAE\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\searchplugins folder and that did the trick - I was able to pick and use the new search plugins (dogpile, askJeeves, google, yahoo etc).


By the way, I saw this just now in the release notes:
6. The deficiencies noted in FireFox 1.0 are inherited in Netscape 8 BETA in most cases. Patches to the FireFox code base will be imported into Netscape 8 BETA as they become available and are tested for compatibility. The recently released 1.0.1 patch has not been imported into Netscape 8 BETA.


EDIT: I was able to install additional searchplugins from http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html after reading other user's suggestions to either:
1. Create your own searchplugins folder in the Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Browser folder
OR
2. Install the mycroft "Top 30" from the link at http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.html

Once again, as reported on November 30, 2004 and February 17, 2005, this new build of the Netscape 8 beta still seems to be packaged with the same installer that does not allow Netscape 8 to be installed on computers that do not meet the exact requirements for software or hardware, even if you are one megabyte of RAM short of the listed requirements.

At least they're no longer implying in the release notes that it will install on Windows NT 4.0 when in fact it won't.
In any case, I would prefer for the installer not to include any unbypassable "requirement" checks at all.

I have not tried Netscape 8 beta out, so this is all I can comment on thus far.

Yes, you should be able to install and (presumably) run Netscape 8 beta alongside Netscape 7.2. The programs should not conflict with each other.

This should also apply to Firefox and Mozilla App Suite. According to the Netscape 8 release notes, Netscape 8's profile location is seperate from that of both Firefox and Mozilla.

During the installation process 'Enter 5-digit US ZIP code for localized weather information' question was appeared. Outside U.S.A. ZIP code like 11111 works well... :)

Actually you don't need to enter anything.
