What Gecko-based browser do you currently use most often?

Postby Andrew T. » Wed 09 Mar, 2005 9:55 pm

Yes, we've had "Which is your favorite Gecko-based browser on Mac OS X?," "Netscape v Mozilla - Battle of the Browsers," "Favorite Web Browser," and other polls before.

However, we haven't had a poll asking this specific question with these specific options, and not since Mozilla Firefox 1.0 was released to great fanfare and Netscape 8.0 prototypes and betas began to circulate.

Given these and other circumstances, it would be interesting to see what Gecko-based browsers are now the most popular among visitors to this forum. This poll runs for 90 days.

Well, since I make it, I'm obviously using whatever is the latest version of [sdt=7971]Donzilla[/sdt], which is usually updated in any fashion somewhere around bi-weekly.
But, due to its early development stages, I currently Firefox to current IE users, although this will probably be shared with Netscape 8 once it emerges from its beta stage.

I use Mozilla Application Suite most often. I did, and still occasionally, use the standalone browser, Firefox, until I switched to the integrated application suite. I enjoy its extensive features and preferences. Also, I find the integration with the Mail/News app, HTML Editor, and IRC chat client superb.

I mainly use Firefox of it's nonbloated user interface and it's customiziable. There are more extensions for Firefox than Mozilla. I use some of the others as backups or testing browsers

One reason it's better to run a poll like this for a limited period of time is that people's preferences can and do change. Here were mine, starting from the time a couple years ago when I first began to use Gecko browsers more often than Netscape 4.x:

Very early 2003: Mozilla suite
Early 2003-November 2003: Netscape 7
November 2003-June 2004: Mozilla suite
June 2004-August 2004: Mozilla Firefox
August 2004: Netscape 7
Late August 2004-present: Mozilla Firefox
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win95; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050225 Firefox/1.0.1

Well, I suppose if I were to attach a timeline of my Gecko based browser use, it would look like this:

October or November 2003 - August 2004: Mozilla Firebird/Firefox
September 2004 - Early November 2004: Mozilla App Suite
Early November 2004 - Late November 2004: Mozilla Firefox
Late November 2004 - Present: Mozilla App Suite

Nov-Early Jan 2003: NS 6
December-Feb2003: Phoenix
Jan-Mar 2003: NS 7
Feb 2003- Sept 2003: Moz Suite
Sept 2003- Now: Firebird/Firefox (at this time I installed KM, new moz suite, and nsb)

K-Meleon currently.

A browser history would be something like this:

Until September 2000 -> Netscape 4.7.x
September 2000 -> Mid 2001 -> Internet Explorer 5.5
Mid 2001 -> Early 2004 -> Mozilla Application Suite
Early 2004 -> Present -> Mozilla Firefox

I'm finding this quite a bit faster than Firefox or Mozilla, and I think it will become my default browser. :)

Since I've moved (pretty quickly!) to Xandros and Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS's I've discovered a couple of Linux only browsers that I'm using quite a lot. Epiphany on Ubuntu and Galeon on Xandros. Both require Moz to be installed as their base.

I used Netscape 7.2 until vulnerabilities were discovered (and were obviously not fixed). I switched to FF and that has remained my default browser, even though I've played around with NS 8.

If you were to put it in a timeline for my experience, it's a bit akward...

1989-1994 -- I don't use any Gecko-based browsers
Lynx, or whatever was available on early UNIX shell accounts through dial-up ISPs for use with VT100 emulators, since nothing else was even around yet.

1994-2001 -- I don't use any Gecko-based browsers
Netscape 6.0 didn't exist until 2000, before that I was using Netscape 4's Mosaic engine. After that, I didn't switch to 6 right away because my computer (at that time a 486/33 with 16MB of RAM) couldn't run it anyway.

2001-very late 2004 -- Netscape 6/7; I don't use any Gecko-based browsers
I've always been a Netscape fan for 6/7, otherwise it's Konqueror 2 (yes, Konqueror 2) and KHTML.

2005-present -- Donzilla; I don't use any Gecko-based browsers.
With Donzilla, I make the browser, so of course I use it. I use Konqueror 3.1 (never bothered upgrading) on Linux.

Of course, I've never used any big E-branded Internet softwate running a pitchfork rendering engine full-time; this is mostly a loyalty thing with Netscape, and since Netscape was still by far the best choice for Windows 3.1 over the 16-bit version of IE4.
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040804 Donzilla/0.6PR1 (like Netscape/7.2; wml/1.3)

gecko browser

Postby Purple Lizard » Thu 10 Mar, 2005 4:47 pm

Hi,

I'm currently using Firefox 1.01 because it's fast clean and small enough not to (Bill take note) hog HD space and RAM on older machines.

Before switching to what was the Pheonix 0.6 back in late '03 early '04
I used a mix of NS 6.23 and Moz app suite 1.1. I still ocaisionally use Moz AS 1.7 but not as regularly as FF.
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050225 Firefox/1.0.1
May The Force Be With You, but mostly with me

OS X, Win XP and FF2.

The browsing history of akbash: Netscape from the time it was a pre-1.0 curiosity somewhat useful for looking at about ten websites, always the very latest version available, until the day Mozilla split off when I was never to touch Netscape again. I switched from the Suite to Firefox & Thunderbird last year some time. I've never seriously used anything else, even during the dark times. I'm not sure whether that's a point of pride. It's going down as a yes, though.
