losing mail files when netscape 7.1 installs

Postby dberns » Thu 12 May, 2005 1:23 pm

For some reason, while using my laptop with windows XP, and netscape 7.1 already intalled, the system again installed netscape 7.1 and wiped out all my old mail files. How can I reclaim them?, particularly my important message files.
Any help would be appreciated

You question has come up so many times that it is not funny. I am not sure what happens, but you may have enabled to software installation|check for updates, which is pointless, and possibly hazardous.
If you have enabled Quick Launch, disable it. Make sure that Netscape is not in the background. Your mail is not lost. Somehow the link to that account is broken. I am not sure what's the way to point to the correct folder in NS7.1, which I have not used for ages, but I think that you can choose the Local directory, accessible from the Mail and Newsgroup settings| your account name|Local directory, and choose the correct account.
If you had pop.blahblah.com, you may be now in pop.blahblah-1.com. Just go back to the one without the number, close Netscape, and reopen it.

I'm assuming that you recreated your mail account and lost access to your old e-mail messages.
Fulvio wrote:I think that you can choose the Local directory, accessible from the Mail and Newsgroup settings| your account name|Local directory,

That would be the Mail and Newsgroup account settings| your account name|server settings Local directory field. In Netscape 7.1 you have to move the mouse cursor to the end of the field and type in the correction. For example, if the field ends in pop.MyISP-1.com change it to pop.MyISP.com. Restart Netscape and see if the mail reappears.

Look at my replies in these earlier threads for more information.

losing mail files when netscape 7.1 installs

Postby dberns » Fri 13 May, 2005 3:33 am

Thanks for the suggestions. Tried to change settings as suggested, deleted -1, which should have brought it back to old mail files, but it did not. Perhaps it is because my folders are in the "incoming mail" and not the "local folders" location. Any suggestions?

You'll need to change the "Local Directory" field in the server settings for your regular mail account (for example, "johndoe@earthlink.net") which would be at the top of the list, NOT in the special "Local Folders" account. Click on the little triangle next to the account name if you don't see "server settings" underneath.

....here is an example, from earthlink's site showing "Local Directory" field at the bottom of the the server settings preferences panel for a "johndoe@earthlink.net" account..

Hope that helps.

At the top of the Netscape Mail window, click on Edit > then click Mail&Newsgroup Account settings. Your mail account ("jdoe@ISP.net" or whatever) should be highlighted already in the list of accounts on the left, but if not, select it. You should see a triangle next to the account name. Click that if you don't see Server Settings underneath, then select Server Settings.

Take a look at the link I posted in my earlier reply. It will show you a picture. What exactly is missing? Did you recreate the Mail account when you first saw that your mail folders wre gone? If the new mail wizard didn't appear or if you cancelled it, you can use the Add Account button in the Mail&Newsgroup Account settings window to create the mail account.

losing mail files when netscape 7.1 installs

I did not notice that riangle because I had access to server settings etc. from previously examining all the options. What I stated in my last query was exactly what I see. Just the mail.netvision.net and below my user name. This server setting is what is necessary for contacting my mail provider and does not relate to the folders, when I examine the folder info it is exactly the same as when I looked at local folder setting ...windows\mozilla\profiles...........

In the server settings for your netvision.net account... can you see the Local Directory field at the bottom? If not, try using the mouse:
Click and hold the bottom edge of the window, then stretch it open further.

The Local Directory field is what tells Netscape which folder to use to hold your mail files.
More information in the links I mentioned earlier.

I am afraid i can not locate a local directory file as you suggest, mouse does not help and when I try the method cited in the links you referred to, since netscape mail is the preferred mailer even the explorer send me to netscape and identical situation. i guess there is no apperent solution.
Thanks for the effort.

I don't remember being able to see the entire line, especially the very end which is needed the most. Whatever I did is probably naive, but it worked,
I deleted part of the line which is was visible, made the correction when the end of the local directory showed up, and finally added back what I removed.
In 7.2 I can see "C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\user\APPLICATION D" and no more than that, but choosing allows me to see a the account name.
I don't recall the 7.1 was so friendly.

No, you only see the beginning of the line, so you have to click and hold in the middle of the line with the mouse, then drag the mouse cursor to the end of the line. Then you can change the ending folder name.

It's not a local directory FILE, it's a "field" or data input area. Look here, at the bottom. ..

Now I am really confused. I found that field and changed the ending after our first exchange., I deleted the "-1" at the end and it had no effect. It clearly says "local" on the bottom above that entry. All subsequent exchanges referred to the server entry above or so I thought.
What other change can I make to that bottom line?
Thanks

Were you in the Server Settings window for your xxxxxxx@netvision.net mail account?

Did you click OK after changing the entry from (for example) xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\mail.netvision-1.net to mail.netvision.net by removing JUST the -1 from the end, not anything else?

Did you restart Netscape?

The the last foldername in the field should now read mail.netvision.net INCLUDING the two periods.
