YIM Ports

Postby Ron Williams » Sat 21 May, 2005 10:28 pm

I was wondering what ports Yahoo Instant Messenger (YIM) uses to send and receive messages. I looked for this online and never found it. I want to block these ports.

The port that it uses is TCP port 5100. Of course, even if you do block it, somebody can always just proxy around the block through a common HTTP port (if they're so inclined). The best thing to do is to uninstall YIM, block the port, then go into IE and add the Yahoo download server to the Restricted Sites zone, so that an IE user cannot download the file anymore. IIRC, you can also have Firefox, Netscape, and Mozilla do this if you install the Adblock extension and block the Yahoo download server.

Why don't you just block the access to Yahoo! Instant Messenger (program)?

I need to block people from using the service without making it obvious that its blocked. This way when people wont ask "will you unblock YIM", they will ask "can you fix the problem with YIM", and I can simply reply with "i tried but cant figure it out".

Just go into the Yahoo program folder and delete some of the .dll files to disable it and/or make it unusable.
