Verizon email

Postby 2wood » Mon 01 Aug, 2005 4:59 pm

 Help please. I just installed Thunderbird 1.06. I've been using Thunderbird 1.00 as my email software for many months with no problems. Last time I downloaded mail was 7/05. Now I'm being told that Thunderbird "failed to connect to server incoming.verizon.net" Verizon "help" line said they don't support Thunderbird, so no help. I am connected to the Internet by cable - Optimum Online and I send my mail out to SMTP server mail.optonline.net and have done so since Verizon wouldn't let me use their mail sever for outgoing mail.

well I use verizon and thunderbird 1.1a so they are wrong. Make sure your incoming is incoming.verizon.net and the outgoing is outgoing.verizon.net and that everything in your account settings is fine, and you should be fine.

Here's the latest. I've uninstalled Netscape8 and installed Netscape 7.1 - I can get my mail with 7.1. I uninstalled Thunderbird 1.0.6; installed 1.0; no good; uninstalled 1.0.0; re-installed 1.0.6; no good - keep getting message
as soon as I double click and it begins to open "failed to connect to server incoming.verizon.net"; doesn't prompt for password. I don't get it.

NS8 should have no effect, since it is similar to Firefox, i.e. no mail.
As your Thunderbird mail, I don't understand it. Make sure that all your mail settings of NS7.1 are identical in TB.
Remember that installing and uninstalling is of little use if you keep using the same profile. Was the profile changed?

Verizon/Thunderbird

Completely deleted every trace of Thunderbird before re-installing, including Profile. It's almost like it doesn't try to get to the server, it gives the message so fast.

And, you still have 7.1, and it is working? I am unfamiliar with Verizon mail, but I heard that it may be quirky.

Yes, 7.1 Netscape is working just fine, thank God. Something to add to the Thunderbird issue. It doesn't ask me for my password fpor my Verizon email server. I think it used to do that right away, since I don't save passwords in Password Manager. Strange???

I will have to ask the same question, to confirm if you did what you said.
If you remove the profile, you should have nothing in TB Tools|Options|Privacy|Passwords|Saved passwords. Is the thing empty?

Verizon/Thunderbird

In Thunderbird 1.0 Tools, Options, Advanced, View Saved Passwords - It's empty. I wish I could add the password for Verizon, just to see if that's the problem. Why doesn't it ask me for the password, like Netscape does? Could there be something in the registry causing the problem?

Try creating a new Thunderbird profile. See:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/profile

OR, if you prefer:

Try removing and then adding back the Thunderbird mail account in Tools > Account settings (save any old mail you want to keep in a special folder created under Local Folders, if you wish, or forward it to yourself, if it's only a few messages, right before removing the account).

When you go to get your new mail in the new profile or recreated account, you should get a password prompt with a checkbox to have Thunderbird remember the password :

Verizon/Thunderbird

Been there, done that - several times., including uninstalling Thunderbird and deleting everything in the Thunderbird folder in my documents and settings within the application folder. It will not ask for a Password, period. Is there anyplace to look in the Registry that needs deleting?

Did you actually use the Profile Manager to create a new profile? Doing so, you will end up with two profiles, the default and a clean new profile with no imported data.

Deleting the Application Data\Thunderbird folder under Documents and Settings and starting Thunderbird causes the Import Wizard to appear. From http://kb.mozillazine.org/Migrate_from_ ... hunderbird
Migrate automatically when launching Thunderbird for the first time

When you install and launch Thunderbird for the very first time, the Import Wizard will ask if you want to import settings and mail from various mail clients, including Mozilla and Netscape. If you select one of these, it will automatically import your entire profile so that it is ready to use when Thunderbird starts up.

At present, this option is only available the very first time you launch Thunderbird on your computer. If you choose not to import anything via the Import Wizard at this point, Thunderbird will automatically create a blank, default profile for you, and once you have at least one profile, Thunderbird will no longer prompt you at start up if you want to import mail and settings from another mail client.

If you "missed your chance" to import your profile via the Import Wizard and you would like to do so later, you can bring up the Import Wizard again by exiting Thunderbird, using the Profile Manager to delete all of the profiles listed, exiting the Profile Manager, and then launching Thunderbird again. (If that fails to bring up the Import Wizard, then exit Thunderbird again, delete all profiles again, then delete the files called "profiles.ini" and "registry.dat", which are stored a directory or two "up" from your profile folder.) This method is recommended only if you have been using Thunderbird for a very short time and you don't mind losing your account settings (if you've already set up one or more acccounts) and access to any messages you've already downloaded.

Importing old data and preferences from another application could cause the problems you are having with Thunderbird, which is why I suggested using the Profile Manager to create a new, second profile. Alternately, delete the Thunderbird Profiles again and, this time, don't import anything.

I did not import anything when I re-installed. I've installed after cleaning out everything in every folder related to thunderbird and didn't import anything. It does not rquest a password. Does the fact that I didn't make it the default browser mean anything? Did I hurt it's feelings?

From your earlier replies above I take it that you can get your Verizon mail while connected to your Optimum Online ISP using Netscape 7.1, but not using Thunderbird and that you've confirmed that your Thunderbird server settings are correct for the Verizon account...

Does it make any difference if you connect to Verizon (instead of Optimum Online) and then attempt to download your mail in Thunderbird? Perhaps that will get you the Password prompt?

Only other sugestion would be to try a the dslreports.com Optimum Online forums, to see if others are experiencing similar issues with Thunderbird:

I suppose you've covered all the bases, but it still sounds highly likely that one of your basic settings is incorrect (perhaps a small typo?).
