I had this problem way back with a NS4.7, when a bunch of files showed up, in mail. At least, I think that this was happening, and I have no clue how I solved the problem. I think that I either created a new account or profile, and they never came back. But, I read of other people reporting this in NS7.x and Thunderbird. has anyone heard of this?
By the way, I thought that it was a n SMTP, but it is, rather ns tmp, Netscape temporary? Is it related to Google Desktop Search, or AntiVirus scanning?

(I apologize in advance for doing just a half-way Google search on this problem.)

The nstmp folders are mentioned on the internet in a couple of ways:

1. They are related to problems due to mail compaction and/or an overly large (over 2 GB) mailbox.

2. Some sort of interaction between a desktop search program (Google and Yahoo were mentioned) and Thunderbird mail creates these folders. I did not get enough on this to report.

Seth -- I was using the 1/18 build when this happened. I have since
updated to the 1/27 build which is much better The 1/18 build would
crash on every compact folder attempt. So far, this build hasn't
crashed -- *period*!

I will, however, keep a watch for the nstmp folder to reappear again and
then see if I can duplicate the occurrence.

I never thought that I would experience this problem, but I recently did.

After compacting a number of my "Inbox" and "Sent" mail folders in Mozilla 1.7.11, a number of these nstmp folders (and one nstmp-1 folder) appeared amongst my mail folders. I've had Google Desktop Search installed for quite some time and recently installed Copernic Desktop Search, so both were active during the compacting process. All the nstmp folders were perfectly readable copies of the inbox of the account. I deleted all the nstmp folders after I made sure that no mail was lost.

I have since uninstalled Google Desktop Search since I prefer the more customizable Copernic product. I may decide to shutdown Copernic's indexing service, or the whole program, before I compact my mail folders again. I've never set Mozilla to automatically compact, preferring instead to do it manually.

The question was asked me by someone else, who could not see anything but the nstmp folders. It appeared that the normal Inbox was gone.
But, interestingly, I had just updated the Copernic Desktop Search, and wanted to do some looking around for odd files, after AVG reported one infection by Java/Openstream, a trojan. AVG, apparently, could not clean things up, but, I did it manually. And, I seem to be clean.Nothing had been activated. But, then, reading some items, after doing a search., I became paranoid, and, tried to use Copernic Desktop Search, but I did shut it off.
Should anyone care, the infected file was a javainstaller.zip. In that form it is no threat, but if unzipped it is.
Anyway, the more things one had, the greater the danger. CDS is going to sleep, for the time being.
