This summary of links to mainly SillyDog threads is to guide the user to discussions of adding more search ability to Netscape 7.2 which seems to have only Netscape Search as an option. I have not tried most of these suggestions and am only listing them here in a "sticky" in order to assist those looking for answers. I may not be able to offer tech help to those who try these ideas, but it seems reasonable that others will offer to help you.

1. Make a bookmark in your Personal Toolbar.
2. Install and use Googlebar for Mozilla. (Note:Any extension could corrupt parts of your Netscape installation, so back up before attempting.)

Also, see this extension at Mozilla Update. It appears that Version 0.9.0.20 "should" work in Netscape 7.2.

1. I still use the old method of attaching the Google "advance search" url to the browser's throbber in the upper right hand corner of the browser window. It can now be done easier by editing the preferences files as mentioned in one of the above links.

I think that most people do not want to do anything too complicated. I would list fixes in the order of ease. I have had a Google button in my Prefbar, by I find the mycroft solution the most fun. I am learning about other engines. I removed the engines I did not care for, very easily.

2. The Mycroft plugin over at mozdev.org also continues to be frequently mentioned.

3. Installing Google Desktop Search does not add a search engine to a browser, but does add a Google Desktop Search which, in my hands, does start up my Mozilla browser so that I can, using the Google software, search my own computer or the web.

There's a security vulnerability now being reported in Netscape 7.2 (as well as UNpatched Mozilla and Firefox browsers) involving search plugins. DO NOT install untrusted search plugins.

There's a security vulnerability now being reported in Netscape 7.2 (as well as UNpatched Mozilla and Firefox browsers) involving search plugins. DO NOT install untrusted search plugins.

Because of these unpatched NS7.2 vulnerabilities and an old codebase, it would be a good decision to remove Sticky from this thread. This thread was informative, but was originally posted more than one year ago.

Lots of people still use Netscape 7.x, so I'd be happy to leave it as a sticky as long as it does not use up valuable real estate on this forum. But I am a bit biased.

I'll ask Antony his opinion. I won't argue to keep it a sticky.

But sooner or later people have to switch to version NS8.x, however.
Yes, many people are using version 7.2 without problems, but it has _many_ unpatched security vulnerabilities and one year is a very long time when we are discussing about browser versions in 2005.
Let's wait for Antony's opinion.
