Firefox now plays AOL music (?)

Postby DiscoFever » Sun 09 Oct, 2005 6:33 pm

were changes made recently to firefox?...It wouldn't play the AOL music videos without the Active X plugin for firefox a couple of weeks ago. Now I can play them with no problem. The same is true for Mozilla suite. But not so for Opera. I have not downloaded any plugins or active X components.
Version 1.0.7 is the one i'm currrently usuing.

I have no idea, but this could also be the changes in AOL Music webpage coding. This is a good news in my opinion.

Opera does not support Microsoft's Active-X.

I haven't tried that page with Netscape 8, but with Safari, it works fine.

Do you have correct media players installed? Preferably all three (QuickTime Player, Real Player, and Windows Media Player)

DiscoFever,

I tried the song links at http://music.aol.com/archive/main.adp in Mozilla 1.7.12, Firefox 1.0.7 and Netscape 7.2 and new software is now required. You no longer need to have the Mozilla ActiveX Plugin installed, as you did before...... I'll update the old Winamp Plugin thread, http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9051

Using Netscape 7.2 I allowed the new AOL Media Playback software to install. My Netscape 7.2 program files' install.log shows:
[tt]-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://cdn.digitalcity.com/radio/ampx/a ... _en_dl.xpi -- 2005-10-10 09:29:24
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nullsoft Media Playback (version 2.6.1)
-----------------------

[1/2] Installing: C:\DOCUME~1\ALICE\LOCALS~1\TEMP\ampx.exe
[2/2] Executing: C:\DOCUME~1\ALICE\LOCALS~1\TEMP\ampx.exe

Install completed successfully -- 2005-10-10 09:29:29[/tt]

There was no change to the activex.js file in the program defaults so I took a look inside my Netsape 7.2 plugins folder and found these new AOL Media Playback files:

npunagi2.dll
npunagi2.xpt

...These two files were automatically added to my installed Mozilla 1.7.12 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7 plugins folders, so no additional action was needed and all three browsers now play the AOL music.

It was simpler, and not so simple. I had to do nothing with Mozilla1.7.12, and Netscape7.2. Neither FF1.0.7 and NS8.0.3.3 got the hint, although the files were present in both program's folder. So, I copied and pasted the two files and replaced the existing ones in both programs. FF1.0.7 did fine, but NS8.0.3 is still saying: Duh?
Seamonkey, the 1.1a nightly is also working ok, but I have no idea what to do with the 1.4.1 nightly. It comes up with the popup, which says that it is done, but did nothing at all. 3 out of 5 ain't bad.

All the install does is to execute the file ampx.exe that is is extracted from the ampx2.6.1.11_en_dl.xpi file. For the heck of it, I ran the install in Firefox beta2 1.4.1 nightly zipped build and it "appeared" to install, the firefox\install.log said that the install completed successfully, but it did nothing.

I suspect that the ampx.exe file just installs the plugins in known plugin folders. I would imagine that my zipped build is "invisible" in that respect, since the firefox beta2 plugin folder location isn't written to the registry.

I had to manually copy the npunagi2.dll and
npunagi2.xpt files to the Plugins folder. Once that was done then the AOL songs would play.

So did I, and it does not work. The only difference from NS8.0.3.3 which keeps telling me that I need the plugin, 1.4.1 goes through the motion, brings up the player, and it is "Done", and that's the end of that.
Actually four of six ain't bad.

No, 4 out of 6 ain't bad.....

But, if it continues to bug you ... I know it would bug me ;) ... see if it helps if you place music.channel.aol.com in your allowed popups list. That was mentioned in the old Winamp Plugins thread for AOL music. It also wouldn't hurt to allow all aol cookies.

P.S. the topic of XPInstall of plugins is pretty interesting......... see:

I just tested the link with Netscape 8, it works perfectly. It turns to MSIE (engine) automatically. I have all three players installed (QuickTime Player, Real Player and Windows Media Player).

It did not bother me, before, but it does now, when I got the same response even after allowing unrequested popups. In 8.0.3.3 , it was trying to open in IE, with no success. Still nothing in 1.4.1.
I, really, don't care a bit about AOL Music, but will see, at later time about 1.4.1, or whatever. NS8.0.3.3 is at the bottom of my interest pile.

You're right, the new AOL Media Playback software no longer needs for you to allow unrequested popups in Firefox. Can't guess why Fx 1.4.1 isn't working for you but works for me. I'm assuming you see the AOL Media Playback plugin in your Fx1.4.1 about:plugins list since you said that you copied npunagi2.dll and npunagi2.xpt to the Plugins folder. I don't have Netscape 8 installed so I can't speak to that.

I won't mention anything more about AOL Music, then, at least for now :)

By the way, speaking of Firefox 1.4.1, I got my first substantial update today (331kb). The other partials, up until today, were all tiny 5kb or so UA updates like I mentioned in the other thread.

I have not gotten any update since I downloaded the entire .zip files. The last one I got, you should see as 10-10. There are no updates.
I don't expect large update every day, but I don't understand what's going on.

No problem. You can mention it, but I will not do anything about it.

Because it can!
