Firescape - My own customized version of Firefox 1.5

Postby Pu7o » Mon 26 Dec, 2005 1:59 am

Well, we've all seen customized builds of Netscape (Streamline, Compact, DJGM's Distros) and Mozilla/Seamonkey (Donzilla), but how about Firefox? Well, here it is.

This custom firefox distribution includes a heapload of extensions (full list available here).

In the Mac version, you need to create a new profile (if you have an existing firefox profile already), or you won't get the extensions and all that. None of that is needed on the Windows version.

The Windows version has dual-rendering capabilities (i.e. it can render certain broken sites with IE's obsolete rendering engine). As such, Windows Update actually works on this.

Both the Mac and the Windows builds include aqua-like widgets.

The icon, a fox around the round netscape "N", was created by Greg Mitchell, aka DJGM :)

A Linux version will be available once either:
  • I actually boot into Linux/BSD
  • I install a Linux distribution in Virtual PC

The homepage (which can be seen on the bookmarks) is still not up.

This project is still in beta. The currently available version is 0.1 Beta 1.
Some things are still not rebranded.

Looking forward to your input.

Congradulations on starting a customised build of firefox. The name is very creative. Nice extentions.

Aren't these heap load of extensions a bit too many?

With Mozilla or Netscape (and actually Donzilla),
Simply hold down Option key while starting Mozilla/Netscape, and you will see profile manager.

With Firefox, it's a bit complicated.

You will need to use command line...
[tt]./firefox -profilemanager[/tt] (that's assume you're in the firefox directory)

For example, if you install Firescape in Applications folder,
then, launch Terminal, and type
[tt]/Applications/Firescape.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -profilemanager[/tt]

Very cool! One suggestion for the future: the firescape icon in the corner of the browser that is the loading indicator in netscape, would look cool with animation.

Pu7o, you may have a problem with the Windows SFX build. I downloaded it and got a message thrown up saying, "This program must be run under Win32." I thought I might've had a bad download, so I downloaded it again after clearing out DZ's cache -- same problem.

I tried using PEVerify to check the PE headers of firescape-whatever.exe, and I got an error saying that it had invalid PE headers. By any chance did you accidentally upload Firescape in ASCII mode?

If you want to tell me what to do, I can package Firescape for you here on XP and make a Linux build in FC4.

Original windows release had a bug, and a very severe problem. Removed the older one and a new one is available, this time as a zip file to avoid SFX problems: http://kernel.ws/~puto/firescape-v0.1b1.win32.zip

The new one no longer has my browsing history. It also fixes a bug where it was impossible to highlight the URL bar. In any case, it's not very serious, because all I browsed were the websites for the extensions anyway

Firescape now has a website, which was already on the bookmarks bar before it was even launched, however it was inaccessible. Now, it is operational, and available at http://firescape.apple.org.ru*

*Note: This is not an Apple-sponsored domain name.
