Postby Antony » Sun 29 Feb, 2004 6:14 am

The RSS file for SillyDog701 Message Centre.

:mac: For Mac OS X :X: users, NetNewsWire Lite from Ranchero Software is available for free. (scroll down that page)

:tux: Linux users, Liferea
:win: Windows users, FreeReader

Current status: beta testing
issues:
UserAgent not shown in RSS. Do we need to show UA string in RSS?
member's signature is shown in RSS. May be removed in the future.
only last 20 posts shown, but somehow not in any particular order. I don't know.

I make no promise this service will be made available.

All users of Mozilla 1.x and Netscape 7.x, can get NewsMonster for RSS feeds.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I'm excited by this development, and I'm pleased that efforts are being made to bring SillyDog701 content in new ways. However, I've yet to find a RSS reader that works on my IE-free, Windows 95 computer. NewsMonster tended to make Mozilla unresponsive, leaving me stranded at the start-up logo, until I removed it, whereas FeedReader balks out with a "The FEEDREADER.EXE file is linked to missing export URLMON.DLL:CoInternetCreateZoneManager" error.

Do you mean programmes like Acrobat reader? I think that's what it's called. I had it on my other two PC's, however I haven't got it on this one. I guess I can download the freeone somewhere, but I'll wait until I download Mozilla 1.6 later.

Acrobat Reader is for opening PDF documents, not RSS content.

How can this be added to Firefox/SeaMonkey?

For example, the BBC has an RSS feed. When their main news page is loaded, there is an orange RSS icon at the far right end of the addressbar. When that icon is clicked, the user has the option to save the "Live Bookmark" and it will show up on the Personal Toolbar Folder, if it is saved to that folder.

I figured out how to add this to Firefox. How often is it updated??

SillyDog701 Message Centre RSS is back!

To see how it works, simply click the QuickTime Player (screenshot) below:

If you are not using Safari browser, you will need to look for an icon that has similar meaning as Image.

NOW, the boring part... This RSS does not seem to be fast, and it is in BETA testing stage. If this RSS does not perform well, or if it takes too much system resources, it may be disabled.

If I may make a suggestion, it would be beneficial to users of RSS clients other than Safari on Tiger and Firefox with Live Bookmarks to put an RSS feed icon somewhere on the forums. Users of clients like Thunderbird or Donzilla can't get the URL of the feed without viewing the source code of the page.

Good idea, if this RSS feed works out to be good, then I will add the RSS icon Image on Message Centre front page.

I will see if I can rewrite the RSS code, it does not perform very well in my opinion.
