Well folks, I installed ZoneAlarm's firewall on my work computer, and it stopped Netscape 8.1, just as it had on my home computer. So, I have un-installed Netscape, keeping my profile, just in case the folks at Netscape get with the folks at ZoneLabs and get this straightened out.

If anyone hears or sees anything, put up a post.

what version Zone Alarm? Zone Alarm Firewall, once, kept me out of my computer, blocking everything, but I never heard of it, blocking a specific application, unless I did it by mistake. I have no idea how it could have done it. In Program Access, you have three choice, Allow, Block, and Ask. If you have a red X it is blocked. But, I have yet to hear that it would do it on its own. I have Zone Alarm, and, I generally allow everything (with IE, it asks).

Fulvio, actually two different builds.

The build on this computer is 6.1.744.001, this is my desktop machine at home, the machine for which i purchased ZoneAlarm Suite 2006.

The other machine, my laptop at work, has 5.1.039.004. I got this free from my ISP. I just installed it today, I know the build is old, so I need to see if I can update it.

You know, I agree that the whole thing sounds nuts. But the evidence is clear, ZoneAlarm was the only variable in today's event.

the version on the home desktop machine is the current one which I have. I can't see how Zone Alarm can block only one program, on its own.
And, you should be able to see if the application was blocked or not.
Now, I could understand what you describe if you have more than the Firewall part (Zone Alarm Pro has been know to cause problems).
Anyway, I would have not uninstalled NS8.1. I would have removed the item in Zone Alarm, and tried again. In one case I had to add an item, which was not recognized by Zone Alarm.
But, I would be very careful with upgrades, as clean installs are (usually not needed) difficult, because a very thorough removal is needed. If it does not worked, you may be blocked from the internet, as it once happened to me
( I believe that it was with a version 4.x). I have had Zone Alarm for five years, and never had any other other problem.

I checked programs in ZA and Netscape looked fine, with all necessary permissions.

I tried both a re-installation from my existing Netscape .exe file with the pre-existing profile, and also, a clean install having removed bothe Netscape 8.1 and the profile. So, as they say, "been there, done that."

Zone Alarm Pro, or Zone alarm Security Suite, they are troublemakes.
All I have is the free Zone Alarm Firewall.
I would not get any of extras, even if they paid me. I don't know what is with and/or the Security suite, but it is more than firewall. That may be the source of your problems, although I don't have the experience to help you with.

O.K., but here is the deal, in a nutshell: ZoneAlarm Security Suite is a very well respected product. I chose it to replace Norton, which was way out of control in trying to run my computer.

Other than the Netscape 8.1 thing, I am very happy with ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

So, what would you do? Go with the highly respected security suite, or the very iffy browser? I mean, you know, I have been at this in sillydog and also the Netscape message boards. Netscape 8.1 is highly problematic if not a complete disaster, based upon all of the replies I have seen to my posts, and based upon other posts I have seen.

I am perfectly willing to come back and install Netscape 8.X in a version that works.

Richard, have you noticed how many times you've used the word "highly" in the above post? It demonstrates something: you're running to extremes in your views of software apps. ZA Security suite is not highly anything. It's a decent security suite that some recommend and others don't. Personally... I go with the free version of ZA firewall and the free antivirus program from AVG. After all... free "can" be good AND (ironically) there have been far fewer problems reported from their free offering than their paid-for apps. Netscape 8.1 you say is highly problematic. Jay Garcia would disagree with you. I'm surprised to hear you say this, given your recent posting here relating to Netscape. I think you will find that the majority of posters here do not use Netscape other than for testing purposes. Most use either the Seamonkey suite or Firefox.
Maybe you should review why it is that you're experiencing these problems and re-assess your configurations. I'm not trying to be a jerk, Richard, just trying to help you by having you re-read what you've written and getting you to think about it... carefully. Richard, I haven't experienced these problems and I use ZA and Firefox (as well as Opera and Seamonkey). So... what can you conclude from this?

Thanks for your note. Seamonkey 1.0 is my default. I was hoping to keep Netscape 8.X as a good second choice in case the next build of Seamonkey breaks stuff I want to have.

On one computer, I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite for which I paid. On the other, have the CA products which my ISP provides FREE. Turns out that while the builds are not exactly identical, in both cases the anti-virus is CA and the firewall is ZoneAlarm.

As I said in earlier posts, I would not quit ZoneAlarm for Netscape, which I believe, did you not say in an earlier post, is DEAD?

I just want a Netscape 8.X that works. It turns out, in posting to these various boards, it's like when you announce what you think is a strange illness or other negative event in your life, and suddenly, everyone around you says, "yes, me too!!"

There is a lot of negativity about 8.1, in all of its aspects, on the boards, sillydog, and Netscape boards, that I did not see before 8.1.

I would not even consider how good NS8.1 is or not. It is a totally different issue. I got NS8.1 to work, to my satisfaction, after I solved the avalanche of tabs quandary, and as I said I have Zone Alarm Firewall ( and AVG, free in both cases). One time that I agree with James.
You don't really know what caused your problem, and, there is no way that I can check anything, anyway. Zone Labs has a good support, being its own tech support, if you paid for it, or the User's support, although you have to sort out the different types of Zone Alarm being used. Basically, I have seen problem being reported, and have not been able to apply much to my applcations. My ISP Tech Support saved me from going crazy, when Zone Alarm locked me out of the Internet, a few years ago. But, at this point, I can't say if Zone alarm was the cause of your problems, or not. You said that you did not include the anti-spyware in NS8.1, but I could not reproduce your results. Some files and folders are there, and some parts of Zone Alarm may be "jeaulous". I know that major Antivirus programs do not tolerate even disabled antivirus. The extra stuff you have may be causing you problems. Zone Alarm Tech Support may not have any answer for you, but if explain to them what you have going on, they may be able to help.
Not, that I care much about NS8.1. You may want to check with Jay Garcia, or, better, the Netscape Browser newsgroup.
