Apple introduced Boot Camp, public beta software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP. Available as a download beginning today, Boot Camp allows users with a Microsoft Windows XP installation disc to install Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac, and once installation is complete, users can restart their computer to run either Mac OS X or Windows XP. Boot Camp will be a feature in “Leopard,â€

And what's included in Apple Boot Camp, not available with the hack provided by [sdt=11043]third party hacks[/sdt].
For your convenience, Boot Camp burns a CD with all the Mac-specific drivers for Windows:
Graphics
Networking
Audio
AirPort wireless
Bluetooth
The Eject key (on Apple keyboards)
Brightness control for built-in display

You now have more reasons to buy a Mac, it does Windows natively!

To note that you need to have a Service Pack 2 CD. If you don't have a Windows XP SP2 CD, you can't boot Windows on your Intel-based Mac. You might have to slipstream Service Pack 2 into your Windows XP CD, or buy Windows XP again.

Also, if you used the "XOM" solution which narf and blanka came up with, you will need to install this to fix your GUID/MBR.

By the way, there was a $1000 prize for getting accelerated ATI drivers to work on Windows XP on Intel Macs... I wonder if Apple's going to get the prize :P

Also, on the Boot Camp webpage, the link to the MacBook Pro FAQ is incorrect, and points to the Mac Mini FAQ. The correct URL is this (guessed it by subtracting 1 to the artnum of the Mac Mini FAQ).

FWIW ... I've started this thread on another forum I'm a member of, for more additional points of view.

One of the regular members of that forum makes a doom laden prediction that this move would mean
there'll be no more versions of Mac OS within the next five years. I'll only believe that when I see it!

Macs: Intel and Windows inside (Cnet)

Also BBC News has a story.

Let's not forget MacBook Pro runs Windows XP [sdt=11111]faster than PCs[/sdt].

Apple said:
Word to the Wise
Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.

Don't forget to read the official FAQ about Boot Camp Beta (from Apple.)

And if you run Windows XP on the excellent Macs, don't be surprised when you see something like this:

 Look at the high-res version of that image. The PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA stop error usually indicates bad memory or bad drivers.

Windows aint at fault, that iMac has bad memory in it - or Apple has supplied buggy drivers!

And, lo and behold, here's another one ... this time, on a MacBook Pro . . . !

With this exciting Boot Camp news, people are buying Apple (shares)!

The Mac Observer wrote:Apple's stock ended its trading day on Wednesday up 9.87%, or US$6.04, to $67.21. At 7:30 PM EST in after-hours trading, it was up another 0.28% to $67.40. The company's introduction of Boot Camp, which enables the owners of Intel Macs to easily run Windows XP on their machines, obviously boosted the stock as investors and analysts had largely positive reactions to the news.

Both have a crash in mskssrv.sys -- it's most likely a buggy sound driver, or somebody attempting to run the iSight without proper drivers -- that's causing this.

The Mac Observer reported that Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal said that Apple's Boot Camp runs Windows XP perfectly, even with 15 applications installed.

Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal (subscription required) has been testing Apple's Boot Camp and Windows XP on his Intel iMac, and says it runs perfectly. He also said that his iMac was "blazingly fast" when running Windows.

(...)

The installation process took under an hour, most of which was used to install Windows. After that, he installed 15 different Windows applications, including Microsoft Office, and found that all ran normally. Mr. Mossberg went on to say that test of Web browsing, email and music playback all ran flawlessly.

(...)

Overall, Mr. Mossberg sees Boot Camp as a fast, reliable, and powerful tool for running Windows XP on the Intel-based Mac product line, and points out that the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini are the only computers in the world that allow mainstream users to run both operating systems at full speed.

And just as important, Boot Camp removed another obstacle to switching to the Mac.
