Apple has released SMC Firmware Update to address boot issues with the iMac (Early 2006), Mac mini (early 2006) and MacBook Pro (15-inch)

The SMC Firmware Update 1.0 is a System Management Control (SMC) firmware update for certain Intel-based computers, including iMac (Early 2006), Mac mini (Early 2006) and MacBook Pro (15-inch) computers. For more detail about SMC Firmware Update 1.0 please see this page.

The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder and will launch automatically after restart.

According to InformationWeek, MacBook Pro owners reported that the new firmware might have fixed the overheating problem.

Apple's super thin laptop packed with powerful latest technology is not new to the overheating problem.

According to Ars' Infinite Loop, the SMC might have reduced the temperature of MacBook Pro... by increase usage of the fans.

Davidson speculates that the thermal paste application, ghastly as it may look, doesn't make a signficant difference. The real issue seems to be that the system firmware designers have optimized for a quiet machine at the expense of the temperature. The easiest way to fix this? A firmware update, perhaps not unlike the one released recently with almost no details. Several reports from users indicated this update increased the use of their fans and fixed their heat issues. Isn't that an astonishing coincedence?
