Adobe announced the release of Adobe Flash Player 9 (formerly Flash Player 8.5), the next-generation Flash Player client runtime. According to press release, Flash Player 9 achieves up to 10 times faster performance through ActionScript 3.0 and a new ActionScript Virtual Machine (AVM), which features a Just In Time (JIT) compiler that translates ActionScript bytecode to native machine code for maximum execution speed.

Currently, Flash Player 9 is, a PowerPC binary only that will not run natively on Intel-based Macs. Adobe said it plans to support Intel-based Macs with Flash Player 9 after this initial release; in the meantime, an Intel-native preview release of version 8 is available for download.

It's interesting to note a few things about Flash 9's installer. First off, the installer for Netscape-compatible products doesn't update the system copy of the plugin itself (NPSWF32.dll) in your %windir%\System32\Macromed\Flash directory. It does update existing plugins in a registered browser install directory, but that's it. The IE installer leaves behind old Flash controls in the system Flash directory as well, though it's apparently been doing this for awhile: I have a Flash 6 control in here as well.

Neither of the installers come with the standalone Flash Player application that came with Flash 8. Flash Player is left intact, so you can still use it, but it apparently interacts with the Flash 8 control instead of the Flash 9 control.

It's unfortunate that Flash is mainly used to create obscenely annoying skyscraper banner ads, the only thing you can do other than remove flash entirely and break a LOT of websites that have a legitimate use for it is buy an ad filtering program.

Adobe is also working on Flash Player 9 for Linux. I have tried out the beta that was available. Although the beta worked, I choose not to use Flash under Linux because it tends to slow the browser down.

In Linux, I can remove the default plugin (libnullplugin.so) from the installation's plugins directory.

Since no other plugins were installed under Linux (except for the beta of Flash Player 9, since removed), if a page comes up that would normally display a Flash ad, I no longer see the "missing plugin" window that appears, nor a placeholder. The site would simply load in a standard ad. Works fine for me.

Related to widely known Adobe products, Flash Player 9 mentioned and Adobe reader 8 are not the most recent (and non-vulnerable when thinking the security) version any more.
