But that screengrab is IE7 . . . There's no way (yet) to make Opera look exactly like IE7. And if even there was,
why on God's green and pleasant Earth would you want the GUI of Opera to emulate the awful GUI of IE7?

IE7 Opera

Postby blinkybill » Tue 20 Jun, 2006 6:42 pm

Hi DJGM,

I am sorry you are wrong on your assumption that it is IE 7 and not Opera
and also that it can't be done as it has and not only by me but other people
on the Opera forums.
For me the look of IE 7 is way better than Opera 9 or Firefox so thats
why I made it. But for me I don't care what people choose to use as
long as they enjoy and it suits them.
I would be happy to send you the skin and toolbar.ini file to you
if you want it or would like to see it is actually been done.
By the way here is my latest update pic...with work I did on the tabs.

Again, that looks to be a screengrab of IE7, not a customised Opera. Unless of course, you can prove to us otherwise.
Type [tt]opera:about[/tt] into your customised Opera, made to look exactly like IE7, and please post a screengrab of it here.

If Opera 9 for Windows can be made into a clone of IE7, then I should be able to do the same on Opera 9 for Mac OS X.

DJGM, blinkybill has posted his Opera browser screenshots over at the Neowin.net forums and the Opera forums. The skin in question is called LikeIE.

blinkybill is using a customized version of the LikeIE skin and a custom toolbar. You can get those two files here.

Here's what I did after closing Oprea:
  • [tt]1Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2.zip[/tt] goes in \skins\ directory in your \Opera\ directory ([tt]C:\Program Files\Opera\skin[/tt]).
  • Unzip [tt]standard_toolbar (1).zip[/tt] and insert [tt]standard_toolbar (1).ini[/tt] into your Opera profile, which should be [tt]C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Opera\Opera 9\Profile\toolbar[/tt] on Windows XP.

Then to change Opera's titlebar, type "opera:config" into the location bar, and in the "Quick find" field, type "title". In the "Title" field, type "Windows Internet Explorer." Click "Save."

In the end, you should get this:

Editing the titlebar:

About page:
Image

Opera 9 rendering the Acid2 test (somthing IE7'll never probably do):
Image

Note 1: I've never got around to uograding to Opera 9 final on my other PC, so all my screenshots are from a couple-week-old Opera 9 weekly build.

Note 2: The most recent configuration files blinkybill has provided are IE7 beta 2 files. blinkybill has created some IE7 beta 3 configs, but you'll have to contact hin for the files. I'm plenty sure he can explain all this better than I can.

Hi DJM,

Once again you are wrong on your assumption that is a screengrab
of the latest Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3.
I also noticed you never took me up on the offer to recieve the skin
from me as proof that it can be done.
Again I am offering to send you the skin and toolbar.ini file.
I look forward to your reply. In the meantime here is the
screenshot you asked for.

He's telling the truth. It is possible to make Opera look like IE 7, see this page for more information.

It doesn't look that good on Vista though...

Side-by-side comparison of Opera themed to look like Firefox, and Firefox 2.0a3:

Side-by-side comparison of Opera themed to look like IE 7, and IE 7 (on Vista):

Opera themed to look like IE 6 (I don't have IE 7, so I can't do a comparison):

Hi,

Thanks Pu7o for your information also, so its seems
it is possible to skin Opera to look like just about
anything. For me I found Opera so much easier than
Firefox to skin.
So if either you Pu7o or beanboy69 want my skin
I will gladly send it to you.
Just message me with your email address and I will
send it.

Opera 9 skin

Postby blinkybill » Fri 21 Jul, 2006 4:50 am

Hi,

Have done some minor changes to my theme. Added button on the toolbar
which will uses the icon from IE7 Beta 3 and will open Outlook Express
from Opera. The second change is on the status bar, which looks like the Google
Notebook but uses Opera Notes. Also I did some changes to the Back and Forward
buttons to make them more like IE7 looks.

Latest Update

Postby blinkybill » Tue 10 Oct, 2006 8:44 am

Hi,

Been doing some more updating on my skin with custom menus
and added the New Tab button on the toolbar.
I have also been changing the the toolbar buttons so now when
you hover over them or press them they have the same look as IE7 RC1.
