Netscape 7.0 mail corrupt inbox, need to delete?

Postby Diane27 » Mon 21 Aug, 2006 10:46 pm

1. I'm a computer novice--know NOTHING.
2. Something has done in my Inbox....can see subject, author, date, etc., but they all open as blank.
3. Will not let me delete or move any of the messages. There are approx. 30 messages there.
4. I believe I need to delete the entire Inbox (or somehow get rid of it) and understand I'll lose the unread mail--that's fine, but I need step by step instructions on how to go about this.

This is Windows ME, and Netscape 7.0 was installed to whatever default settings it suggested.

Thanks! Diane

Thanks! Diane

First, locate the following folder:

C:\Windows\Application Data\Netscape\NSB\Profiles\Default\*******.slt\Mail\pop.<your isp name>.<com or net>

"*******" is a random group of characters. The folder, "pop.<your isp name>.<com or net>" (in your case this may be; pop.lightspeed.com) contains all your mail folders, e.g. Inbox, Drafts, Sent, etc.

In it, you should find two files, one called "Inbox" and the other, "Inbox.msf". "Inbox" contains the emails and "Inbox.msf" keeps track of the emails in the Inbox folder.

If you right click on the "Inbox" file, select "Open with", and from the list of applications, choose WordPad. If you do that and can read the emails, I would think that your Inbox is OK.

If so, with Netscape closed, delete the "Inbox.msf" file. Then restart Netscape, the "Inbox.msf" file will be re-created and, hopefully, you should be able to access the emails in your Inbox. It might be advisable to make a copy of the "Inbox" file (with a different name, e.g. "InboxCopy") before deleting the "Inbox.msf" file!

If that doesn't work, come back and let us know so we can try something else!

Regards,

Dave.

In WinMe, you Inbox would be in this path:C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\xxxxx.slt\Mail\accountname. You should see, in Windows Wxplorer, pairs of files, like Inbox and Inbox.msf, or Sent and Sent.msf,etc. You may have a corrupted header filr(.msf). Take note of the size of the Inbox file. As a first step try to delete, the Inbox.msf file only, with NS closed. Get out of Windows Explorer, and reopen NS. Go into your mail, and see if things improved. Compact (File|Compact) your Inbox, if not done before,
If you have 30 messages, you may have 1 MB Inbox. If larger, and you did not compact, see if the size of the Inbox file has changed.
Finally, access your mail through your ISP website. You should be able to delete mail from the website. At this point, I would not even consider deleting the Inbox file.

Thank you both so very much for your help! "You fixed it!" I deleted the .msf files, and
like magic, my Inbox is fine.

One more question. I've been through different ISPs, not because I change, but because they keep being purchased by a bigger company. Under the Mozilla, Profiles, Cassie, 4feg****.slt
Mail I found folders for earthlink.net (current) and prior ISPs. There are old msgs via those
ISPs stored in separate folders on this computer. If I delete the old Mail onemain.com, for example, folder, will it remove the email during the onemain days? The inbox says 0 bytes.

Thanks again, wish there was a way to express how much I appreciate the assistance!

That's great! I'm pleased that it was that simple and that you haven't lost any emails there were in the Inbox folder.

If the Inbox file size is 0 bytes, then it means that it is empty and doesn't contain any email! You can delete the Inbox (and Inbox.msf) files in that email account with impunity! That also applies to any other email files in that account folder. However, don't do that to the "Inbox" file (or any of the default email folders) in your current email account or you will lose your Inbox - or whichever file you delete! That doesn't, of course, apply to the .msf files.

There will be other email files in the old account which may contain emails, so if you delete the account folder, you will lose those emails.

However, I'm not sure if what you want to do is just delete the Inbox file, or to delete the "pop.onemain.com" folder. If you do that, yes, it will delete any email in that account. If you want to keep that email, just move the files (without the .msf extention) in that folder to your current pop.earthlink.net account folder, with Netscape closed. If there are any files in the current account with the same name, you will have to re-name the ones you may want to move from older accounts. When you restart Netscape, those email files will appear in your current email account.

Thanks again, wish there was a way to express how much I appreciate the assistance!

That's OK, pleased to be of some help! :)

Regards,

Dave.
