Australian environmentalist and television personality Steve Irwin has died during a diving accident.

Mr Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb to the chest while he was filming an underwater documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from the nearby city of Cairns rushed to treat him at the scene but were unable to save him.

Mr Irwin was known for his television show The Crocodile Hunter and his work with native Australian wildlife. He was well known for chasing all manner of dangerous wildlife, including snakes like the Black Mamba.

He was such a funny and crazy guy! I loved his shows and documentaries. He was one of my top role models, mainly for his fearless and loving attitude towards animals.

SillyDog701 had a discussion on Steve Irwin [sdt=4325]two years ago[/sdt], about his baby feeding incident. (He held his baby son in one hand while feeding crocodiles in the other hand.) He did not apologise for his actions, instead, threatened public that he might quit his business (he did not).

He was an Aussie Legend.

It's too bad, really. We always enjoyed watching him. But frankly... it was just a matter of time. He pushed the ticket with wild animals and it was something that was bound to happen sooner or later. Sort of like that tiger duo in America (can't remember the name) one of whom was savagely bitten on the neck and has never fully recovered. Tragic really.

It was definitely a shock to read of Steve Irwin's untimely death early this morning on BBC News Desktop Alerts.

Whenever I watched his TV shows, I often thought that one of these days, one of those crocodiless is going to
get p***ed off at him and that'd be that. But, sudden death caused by stingray was definitely unexpected.

He may have come across as a nutter to some people, but Aussie wildlife has just suffered a great loss.

I know what you're talking about James. They were Siegfried and Roy, i watched one of their performances in Los Angeles in 2001. Watching these, including Steve, was a great experience, seeing them so fearlessly adoring animals is really touching.

These things happen, and we can't help it.

My condolences to Steve's wife and kids.

I feel sorry for his children and his wife, but she is probably a very wealthy woman today. They were both supposed to be Wildlife Experts but in my opinion, they weren't.

I think it was a tragic way for him to die as I always
thought a crocodile would bite his head off one day...

I didn't like him after I saw him holding his baby in his arm and dangling a chicken for the crocodile.....he said he knew his
crocodiles and there wasn't any danger.....
well, any man that would put his baby in such a precarious position depending on the whims of a crocodile and his "knowledge" of wildlife should have been jailed and/or fined for endangering the life of a child.

I don't understand how he got away with it.
It is child abuse as far as I am concerned and teasing a wild reptile is also abusive and I heard that at first from the wire services, that he was dangling a stingray for the cameraman to take photos. But that was sure hushed up quickly.

It's just my opinion:) As you know, I am an animal lover.
