From my networking knowledge (to Mr Jay Garcia's surprise, I did take a course in networking) using a different DNS could speed up internet connection if your ISP's DNS is not well configured or slow. It is also possible that a different DNS can provide a better "route" the website you want to visit.
As for their safer claim, they said they block phishing sites based on public data.
