Steve Jobs wrote:Well today, we're introducing THREE revolutionary new products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary new mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough internet communications device.
An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator. An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator…. these are NOT three separate devices! And we are calling it iPhone!
Unlike traditional smartphones, the iPhone doesn't come with a stylus - instead, you use your fingers and an on-screen software keyboard to type, make calls, surf the Internet, and so on. The new system for finger navigation has been dubbed MultiTouch, and according to Steve Jobs, "BOY, have we patented it!"
Here are the announced specs of the device:
- 11.6mm thick
- 2 megapixel camera
- Speaker
- Mic input
- iPod connector
- Quad band GSM+EDGE phone
- Accelerometer (detects how you're holding it and adjusts screen)
- Ambient light sensor (auto-dimming)
- Proximity sensor (when you bring it to ear, turns off display and sound)
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0
The phone runs a version of OS X designed for smartphones much like Microsoft's Windows Mobile editions. Yahoo! will be rolling out push-to-phone e-mail service for free specifically for the iPhone, much like the technology used by RIM's BlackBerry handhelds. At $500 for the 4GB model and $600 for the 8GB model, the phone is quite pricey.
