Firefox Crashing In Astrology Forum

Postby Tham » Wed 20 Jun, 2007 10:27 am

Some of the users of this astrology forum, which
I take part in now and then, have been reporting
Firefox crashes.

They appear to occur in the forum pages, but not in
the rest of the website, and more on Mac than PC systems.

I've suggested they switch to SeaMonkey, Netscape, Camino
or ICab, as you can read in the forum.

One of them is also reporting mouse cursor instability in
the forum's text windows. She's using Mac OS 10.

Could you post a link to the forum in question?

Wow, that was a really prompt reply, before I could
even edit my first post.

Sorry for the oversight, the link is posted above.

Thank you.

Okay, I think I've found what could possibly be your problem.

In [tt]http://forum.astro.com/h/astrodienst.css[/tt], you have the following code for the [tt]gencbutton[/tt] class:

Code: Select all
.gencbutton {
   font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
   font-size: 8pt;
   font-weight: bold;
   padding-bottom:1px;
   color:#FFFFFF;
   background-image: url(/im/chartbg.jpg);
   background-repeat: no-repeat;
   background-color: #003399;
   cursor: hand;
   width:230px;
   height:21px;
   border:0px;

}

[tt]cursor: hand;[/tt] is nonstandard code used by Internet Explorer 5.x. [tt]cursor: pointer;[/tt] is the proper way to do it. My guess is that Firefox on the Mac doesn't have a binding for [tt]hand[/tt] as it does on Windows, so when somebody puts their cursor over anything that's given the [tt]gencbutton[/tt] class, it might crash.

Other than that I can't find any code in particular in here that would cause a crash. While the code might not pass validation, the errors that come up would simply be discarded or fixed rather than bring down the whole browser.

Thanks very much for the quick work, Don.

I think this at least takes care of the Mac crash problem.
I will inform the forum people about this.

Astrology is something that almost everyone has an opinion on. Whether you believe in it or not, there is no denying that it is a hugely popular subject for many people. open this site astrologyquestions.com
