Buying new iMac.

Postby VetteHead » Mon 12 May, 2008 7:27 pm

I am going to be buying one the new iMac's soon. My question is this. If I use the FireWire cable to port over everything will it also port over all the junk that has been accumulating forever, like plists and such? How can I have a "clean" port? Is there a way to clean my system BEFORE I port?

Thanks for you help, I appreciate it.

Hello Paul,

Welcome to SillyDog701.

You can try to use third party uninstallers such as [url=http://www.appzapper.com/] when uninstall apps, it will remove associated files such as preference files.

To turn up your Mac, you can try Cocktail.

To use Migration Assistant, you can also use network connection (besides a Firewire cable).

If the main things you want to migrate to a new Mac are your mail and address book, bookmark etc. I would suggest not to use Migration Assistant. Simple export/archive your mailbox, address book and bookmarks. Then import those files into your new Mac.

You can also go to [tt]~/Library/Preferences/[/tt] folder and copy the wanted [tt].plist[/tt] files to your new Mac.

(You can order a new Mac from Apple Store through our link and support SillyDog701.)
