It seems that Apple goofed in Safari's EULA - it's against the license terms to install it on a non-Apple-branded PC.

Apple has since modified the Windows version of the SLA for Safari for Windows to read, "This license allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on each computer owned or controlled by you." That change effectively eliminates any issues regarding installing Safari on Windows.

i do really like the font rendering, it's so crisp.

but speed wise, i'm not sure in real world usage it is the fastest. it's fast, but somehow ffb4 seems faster.

the interface is horrible. not a major reason for not using it, but that horrible brushed grey effect is ghastly. at least make it look like a windows application on windows, please or let the user choose.

also, no adblock is a killer. everytime i have to use a browser without adblock installed, it amazes me the sheer amount of rubbish i never, ever see.

maybe that's why firefox feels faster to me... it doesn't need to load all the rubbish adverts and intellitxt scripts. (in fact, even this site has intellitxt scripts highlighting words in the forum. i had never seen them before i tried look here with safari!)

Now that's Unethical.

I don't understand all this unethical fuss. But, would I have more than one computer, I could care leass for Safari, if I understand the restrictions.
I, always, agree with everything, because not agreeing means that you don't want the program as it comes. But, I would be very upset, if anyone would force me to keep a program, or use it only the way they want it. Can you imagine something like this?
And, I am talking about individual programs, not OS.

One comment about using Safari.
Yesterday, I thought that it would be neat to do the income taxes for my son (he owes quite a bit). Going to irs.gov all sort of stuff is available, including the ability of doing the returns on .pdf files. I backed up the files, at different times, but did not check them. I had the backed up files directed to the desktop. The return was not completed, and I backed up the file one more time. When I exited, there was no backed up file. After much cussing, I redid the form in Firefox, and found that the incomplete file had been backed up, as a .pdf file. Flock gave me the same option as Safari, i.e. to save the 1040.pdf as All Files. However, Flock saved the file, but Safari did not.
And, to those people who freak out because such files need to be downloaded, and opened outside the browser, I have an answer. File|Save does nothing, in Safari at least, but the icons in Adobe Readers do work, but, still no saving.

Questions:

- Can Safari be easily removed?

Yes, I have removed it from my WinXP machines after checking it out for a short while.
The Apple Software updater will continue to offer it after removal though, just like it will plug newer versions of iTunes (7.7) that put a MobileMe icon in XP's control panel.

- Does it have anything similar to ad-block?

There is nothing similar to FF add-on apps; a very big disadvantage imho..

- Will McAfee SiteAdvisor work with it?

I don't know.
May be you don't need a site advisor while on Safari

- Besides speed of loading, what are its strong points that might entice a FF user to try it out?

I tried it for a while because the render engine is supposed to be very good (strict) and wanted to check a couple of sites I developed. Can't see any real 'uniqueness' though when I compare it with Opera, Firefox or SeaMonkey. I really missed the functionality of the FF add-ons and - critical for me with any browser - I just didn't like the way bookmarks or cookies can be managed, so was done with it pretty quickly.

Just curious.

Wow. My questions were finally answered (six months later but answered nonetheless). Thanks. After having read your responses and also having purchased a new computer, I don't think I would bother downloading and trying out Safari. I see very little to be gained. Besides, Firefox just does it all for me so why look elsewhere?
