Just registered to thank erdiko for solving my dissapearing real and virtual cd/dvd drives.

I've been going crazy trying to fix this and still no idea why suddenly my drives stopped working.

Still, one little registry edit later and everything is back to normal.

I followed Erdiko's instructions and got my two DVD drives back but now when I go into Explore and try to read a CD with a bunch of JPG files on it I seem to get a never ending hourglass and Explore becomes unresponsive. This is happening on both DVD drives. I've tried a couple of other CD's and the same thing happens. Looks like I'm only half way fixed.

Hi,

I just registered. I have been trying to fix my problems with inoperative dvd-drives and this thread seems to be active and helpful and to have a lot of success stories. But I am not one of them.

My configuration is Win-XP-SP3 with 2 IDE DVD drives (Pioneer DVD-105 and Sony DDU1612).

After deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry and rebooting, the drivers seem to reinstall, but the devices are identified as CDROMs (not DVDs).

Is that a part of the problem?

Device Manager says "the drives are working properly", but even CDs are not opened. The driver doesn't even recognize when a CD is in the drive. Attempts to uninstall the devices from device-manager result in a hung system and I have to power off and power on.

I have tried the devcon program - which I found via the Barugon's-Cave blog. That program reports the upper and lower filters are still present, even though they are not visible in the registry on the 4D36E965-E325... CDROM Class key. Devcon reports that the upper filter is "redbook" and the lower filter on the Pioneer drive is "imapi".

One last curiosity, in the ENUM/IDE section of registry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, there are two entries for each of the DVD-drives. In each case, the first instance has no upper/lower filters, but the second instance does have these filters along with a control-key which has an 'active service' entry with value 'redbook'.

Any ideas on what I can do short of flattening my system?

I followed the same steps and got the CD Drives to reappear and recognize everything EXCEPT for DVD Roms, which is really what i need it to recognize. DOes a dvd reading program need to be re-installed or something? And not a DVD viewer, i am trying to install a program off of a DVD rom disc (specifically MS Word)

I just have to say thank you... I was trying for about 3 hours last night to find the proper driver that I am missing for my older Dell from Dell's website (which was a waste of my time btw) as well as a few other drivers sites. But, this took care of my problem in no more than 30 seconds just like you said. I'm impressed!

Just to reiterate my problem which is not solved by removing the upper and lower filters. See my earlier post (Dec 30).

I have a situation similar to that describe by the messages from lasercul and longfoot. My 2 DVD drives are visible and device manager says they are functioning. But they are not. And they are identified in the registry as CD-ROM's. The drives don't work with CD's either.

Is there something else we can do?

Load an application that writes DVDs?
Add some specific filters to the registry entries for the drives. I have other drivers in the list applicable to the drives specifically "imapi" and "redbook".
Can I manually add them to some registry entry?

I really don't want to start from scratch.

I have 2 drives: a CD-ROM; and a DVD-ROM / CD-R/W. (Both work. The CD came in the machine; I added the DVD.)
In the Registry there are many references to these; in some places the DVD is also classified as a CD-ROM.

I also have the IMAPI / Redbook annotations.

I am not familiar with devcon.

Does either (or both) your drives have Write capability? I don't see that documented. In any case, if you can't even read a CD in either drive then I seriously doubt that a writing application is germane.

- Theoretically, yes of course. But what would you put in? I have dozens of entries.

Were there other drive(s) previously in this machine? Were they cleanly removed before these drives were installed?
Are these new drives? If not, did they used to work?
Are there any BIOS parameters that apply?
Note that in the Details tab of the device Properties that you can scroll down (down arrow) through a lot of information. This is not all that is in the Registry, but an extract from it.

What I would do now (this is an outline, not a complete task check list):
- Double check that you have the latest drivers installed (from the drive vendors).
- Make a Restore point.
- In SAFE mode: disable the drives, uninstall the drivers.
- Physically disconnect them: power and/or signal.
- (If another computer is available and has a free bay, install a drive and test.)
- Boot (Safe, again). Make a Restore point. Check the Registry. Optionally: manually delete all the references you can find. (The great danger here is that you'll miss some, since there are CLASSes and other cross-references that are not easily identifiable.) Shut down.
- Reconnect a drive (or both).
- Boot and test.

I still don't know what was the cause of this error, but it seems to be common, mine was error code 39.

Error codes reference. But the repair/recovery information in some cases is nebulous (applies to too many causes).

The advice on here is good advice but BEWARE. The key provided may have multiple entries. Some of these entries cannot be removed. For example, your mouse/keyboard may stop working if you remove the wrong Upper/LowerFilters.

Take a look at the key values. Avoid it if it says something like mousclas, etc... Kill it if it's something like InCD, etc... There is usually only one key you have to edit.

This wonderful fix to a nasty problem states:
Find the entries (upperFilters and lowerFilters. . .) under the entry
HIKEY_LOCAL_MACHINBE\System\. . .and delete it.

I'm confused as to what to delete. I assume the HIKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE . . . entry is to be deleted along with the UpperFilters and LowerFilters lines.

Is that correct?

ok i jus recoverd my computer from a nasty mal/virus and now my dvd drive has disappeared from my computer... i have tried uninst/reinst drivers but to no avail the device manager says its working fine but now when i go to play certain games the drive jus keeps telling me to keep inserting the game..this all happend right after i installed i tunes and was wen i got the damn virus and the drive disappeared, now the only game that will work in the dvd drive is SPORE and apple game (how ironic) so i was just wondering if i should do thing that is mentioned above or try something else?
