Firefox 3.5 Released

Postby profman » Thu 18 Jun, 2009 3:18 am

The direct download link on the Release Notes page now has the annotation "Firefox 3.5rc2, English (US), Windows (7.1MB)" and another link directs you to the download page for Firefox Release Candidates. [Content edited out.] I do include below a direct link to a version listed as 3.5RC1. [NOTE: The Final Release has superseded all RC builds.]

Note that this is NOT a general release of RC1 for the public! Do NOT apply this update unless you consider yourself a tester of beta software. The Release Notes page linked below says:
Firefox 3.5 (Release Candidate) is the seventh development milestone of Firefox 3.5, the next version of the Firefox web browser. While this release is considered to be stable, it is intended for developers and members of our testing community to use for early evaluation and feedback. Users of the latest released version of Firefox should not expect all of their add-ons to work properly with this milestone.

Firefox 3.5 (Release Candidate) Release Notes [NOTE: All downloads referenced in this page now link to Final Build instead of the previously linked-to 3.5b4 beta.]

released to beta users June 16th, 2009

Firefox 3.5 (Release Candidate) is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past year. Firefox 3.5 offers many changes over the previous version, supporting new web technologies, improving performance and ease of use, and adding new features for users:

* This beta is now available in more than 70 languages - get your local version.
* Improved tools for controlling your private data, including a Private Browsing Mode.
* Better performance and stability with the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine.
* The ability to provide Location Aware Browsing using web standards for geolocation.
* Support for native JSON, and web worker threads.
* Improvements to the Gecko layout engine, including speculative parsing for faster content rendering.
* Support for new web technologies such as: HTML5 <video> and <audio> elements, downloadable fonts and other new CSS properties, JavaScript query selectors, HTML5 offline data storage for applications, and SVG transforms.

Here is a direct FTP link for downloading the Firefox 3.5 RC1 version: 3.5rc1.
[NOTE: The Final Build has superseded all RC builds.]

A post obtained via Google Groups is partly quoted below:

On June 19th, we hope to release (on our website, as a full download)
a release candidate. Right now that would be the rc2build2 version, as
it's the latest thing we have. So, in other words:

June 16th: Firefox 3.5 beta users get updated to an early release
candidate (rc1build2)
June 19th: Firefox 3.5 beta users get updated to the official release
candidate, which is also put up for direct download (right now this
would be rc2build2, but that may yet change!)
end of June: target ship date for Firefox 3.5

Stay tuned for details.

[Edited to reflect release of Final Build and change in the pages linked to. 6/19, 6/27, and 6/30/2009.]

There is now a file listed as "Firefox Setup 3.5 RC 2.exe" which is available from Mozilla. Its listed under 3.5rc2/win32/en-US.

This may be Mozilla's attempt at Release Candidate 2, or it may be Mozilla's second attempt at Release Candidate 1.

I'm sure that this is still considered beta software, so install it at your own risk. (Me? I'm still making the transition from FF 2.0.x.)

Thanks for the information, profman. Personally, I don't touch betas or release candidates but I do like to see how things are coming along. :)

I just announce the new versions and some betas. I certainly do not instantly adopt them.

Back in the days of Netscape, I used to use betas, but I stopped that when things switched over to Firefox. Now, I hang back a bit before adopting new things. Its partly a function of how much trouble that I want to go through.

It takes long time before I install any new program. Even now, I am taking a look at 3.5, but only with a nightly. I download the .zip file, which does not require any installation. Unzipped files can be deleted, and there is nothing left behind.

Mozilla has finally released Firefox Release Candidate 2 to the public.

All of the Firefox 3.5 Release Notes links now refer to Firefox 3.5 RC2. This includes the download page for Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate.

I would still consider any Release Candidate to be close to beta software, although with a bit more stability. Use at your own risk. Mozilla states:

This is pre-release software: you may encounter compatibility problems with some websites and add-ons.

RC3 has been released.
As I said before, I have been testing the betas. So far so good.
The equivalent Thunderbird3.0b3 are atrocious, in my opinion.

I've been running since the first RC here with no problems at all. Then again, my PC is loaded with pre-release software, Windows Seven, MS AV beta etc.

Fulvio: Thanks for the update! (Note that Fulvio links to a "nightly" build which I can not be sure is identical to RC3, although it certainly could be the same.)

The links below at Mozilla now point to this RC3:

A nightly is identical 9 times out of ten, but I have run into some sad examples.

So, Fulvio... what has been your general impression of FF 3.5? :?:

Betanews says that the official Firefox 3.5 release may come as soon as Tuesday, June 30.

Some quotes from the betanews article, Firefox 3.5 gears up for a possible Tuesday public release, follow below.

No longer a beta, users will get the first opportunity to see a completely stable version of Firefox's new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, ...

One demo, ... , demonstrates the browser's new support for HTML5 with not only embedded video, but JavaScript that can embed graphics or video in the embedded video, in real-time, several frames per second.

In what may be one of the last tests of Firefox 3.5 RC3 performance compared to new releases of the Google Chrome 3 and Opera 10 betas, the browser was posting scores that were 246.3% those of Firefox 3.0.11, in Betanews tests of RC3 on a physical Windows 7 platform.

ok. I am not going to claim greater speed, because 3.5 is not compatible with a ton of add-ons.
I may try it as default, when the final version is out.

3.5 final is available!
