SeaMonkey 1.1.17 Released

Postby iJohnE » Tue 23 Jun, 2009 8:37 pm

Image
SeaMonkey 1.1.17 was released yesterday, but I just noticed it today.

The new release closes several security vulnerabilities as well as a few smaller bugs/problems found in the previous release.

You can download SeaMonkey from the project's website or from the Mozilla FTP site.

SeaMonkey is an all-in-one application suite that combines a web browser, mail client, IRC chat client and HTML editor all in one. It is the predecessor to the infamous Mozilla client.\

It's available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

So, I finally got SM the way I want it on my Acer netbook:

Colorful tabs, tabx, Mostly Crystal, web site favicons, and the wallet.cypto thing in about:config for use with MyYahoo.

No idea about that one Richard. I sometimes have to put Firefox/2.0 into my SeaMonkey user agent for Facebook to display properly. But that problem is cleared up in SeaMonkey 2.

Glad you got it to work the way that you wanted on you NetBook. How's that thing doing? I've been thinking of getting myself one of those.

Yep, the snow melted, and it has been unbearably hot and humid because of the rain. Yesterday, it stopped raining, and I went to an amusement/water park with my 9th grade class, and had a blast.

Anyways, glad I could let you know about the SM update.

John-

Here's the thing about the netbook: you get what you pay for, nothing less, but nothing more.

I had to replace my aging and dying Inspiron 8000 PIII machine. I had not even thought about what to do for that. I went to Best Buy to get DVD-R blanks, 100 for US$22.00. I saw the Acer end-cap display of this thing. I looked, I saw the right ports, I saw the Atom N270 processor, 160 gig hard drive, 1 gig DRAM and all for US$299.99.

In thbe end, I spent much more, "dressing it up" for home use: external DVD writer, 20" Acer VGA monitor, USB AC powered hub, Logitech mouse, Logitech keyboard. I am up over US$700.00. But I can just take everything off when I travel, and while I could get a much faster and more complete machine at the small size, it would cost much more than US$700.00.

All I wanted was something to manage my 1Tb external drive that I use for music and video (I have 300 gigs of data), and to "crunch" for BOINC and WCG projects (the Atom processor is hyperthreaded, so it processes two work units at one time, and each twice as fast as the PIII.

All that said, this is not a fast machine. Seconds go by opening Win Explorer or WMP11.But, it is great for travel. I am glad I got the Acer 150-1635, 8.9" display, because the newer units are larger. They are also more money, but the same processor, DRAM and HDD.

So, if one is used to a Core 2 Duo machine, Windows or Mac, this will not replace it.

I'm not looking to replace my laptop, which if I may report is fixed, well except the batter and AC adapter problems.

I was just looking for something that would be a little easier to carry around, and do a little word processing such as notes and such during classes, without taking up my entire desk. My Dell Studio 1537 has a 15.4" display, and is a little bulky.

So, you I take it you like the Acer? I've been looking at a couple of the HP ones.

My wife and I have an Acer netbook too, John. We really like ours. We also have a Dell laptop but as you say... they're a little bulky at times (particularly when traveling).

Awesome James.

I'll look around my local computer shops, and see what's on the markets as far as Acer goes.
Convincing my parents that I need one will be a different story. :P

John-

Yes, I got what I needed.

Take a good look at the HP's, look at the weird ports, those flat wide slots, I have never seen anything like them before. If they are proprietary, then they can be a problem.

For size and what you describe as what you want to do, my machine would be perfect.

I had a copy of Office XP I could have used, but I chose to go with Open Office. That may change. I find Open Office to be very slow. I did have an experience with it on one of my Core-2-Duo machines. I had in error uninstalled Office 2007 and could not get it to re-install. So, I installed Open Office and was totally unimpressed. In the end, a Microsoft engineer in Bangalore re-installed Office 2007 for me, three hours, for no money.

I had not realized that I needed to edit the Registry for Office back to Office 8 or 9. He took over my machine and removed everything through the Registry. Now, if I had to, I could do it myself, as I saw everything he did.

WinXP is supported out to 2014, at least for security, so that is not a problem.

Just don't buy into the small flash drives, and check out those HP ports befroe you buy anything.

John-

Sorry, I forgot, the day I saw this thing, I hit five local big box stores, Best Buy, Office Depot, etc. They all had the Acer display, but nobody had it in stock. I bought it on line on a two day shipment from Frys.

I have a copy of XP Office 2002 Professional, I never use it as I just got Office 2007 Pro.

I will check out the ports that you have mentioned.
