Want to remove current gen of Opera from my system totally

Postby Lard » Thu 16 Apr, 2009 12:56 pm

I've been having some multiple issues with Opera since I installed it about 3 months ago.

Opera has been becoming increasingly unstable. It's gotten to the point where Opera has been crashing *at least* once a day. Lately, it's been crashing, and then when I start it up, it crashes *again* and I have to force quit it just to get it to stop hanging.

As of today, I'm getting messages that the Opera.exe file is corrupt. I was told to run chkdsk, and I did. It said it deleted one corrupt file and then an error occurred and the chkdsk stopped during Stage 2.

It seems like Opera is impossible to get rid of, even if you uninstall it.

I would like to uninstall it and make sure it's out of my system completely.

Can someone give me a hand please?

Sometimes one must do a re-installation of a program, then turn around and uninstall it. The re-installation reestablishes the files and Registry entries necessary for the uninstall to work. This is a generic work-around, not specific to Opera.

If this doesn't work, then one must resort to editing the Registry, and deleting the folders and files pertaining to the product. There can be some gotchas with this process, so don't do it unless you are comfortable with working with the Registry. It may be best to just leave the detritus in place, and just not to open the program.

I have had a great time attempting to remove Opera. I, still, have 9.52 and 9.62 listed in the Add/Remove, and, so far, no way to remove the Registry item. I "uninstalled" 9.64, and it is no longer in the Add/Remove, but all files are still in the Program Files folder.
I will give it another shot. I wonder if reinstalling 9.52, first, and, then uninstalling would do the job. I will report.

Fulvio: Your problem appears not to be the same as Lard's.
Were you unable [sdp=95342]to locate[/sdp] any Registry references to the residual Add/Remove entries?

References: [sdp=95253]here[/sdp], and last paragraph [sdp=95315]here[/sdp]. If "Opera" isn't listed by name, start at the top of the keys - those with hex labels. Click on the top one, look in the right pane for identifying information, usually with the name of "DisplayName". Then step down through the list using the keyboard down-arrow key.

Paul,
in no particular order, I first tried to reinstall 9.52. I had the installation file. But, the Opera which was installed, was 9.60, a version which had not, previously, been listed in the Add/Remove. I uninstalled it, and 9.60 remained in the Add/Remove.
I did a Find: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Opera, in regedit, but I found nothing.
9.52 and 9.62 are, still, listed in the Add/Remove, with 5.62 and 15.69 MB, respectively.
I, think that I did follow directions. But, there is, no doubt, something weird about Opera.
Note: I reinstalled 9.62, and uninstalled it. The line disappeared from the Add/Remove, but the Opera Program Files remaine untouched. And, the 9.62 line reappeared in the Add/Remove. I deleted the OPera Program Files, and hit remove on 9.62, and 9.62 did not reappear.
I posted at the Opera users forum, and will see if I get any answer.

Once upon a time, many moons ago, I ran across a similar situation: a product appeared in the Add/Remove list, but wasn't under the normal Registry Uninstall key. As I recall it, I did a search for the product name and finally found it. But I don't recall what key it was under.

With Opera as uninstalled as you can get it, can you get any useful hits by doing a Find for the word Opera? If no luck, repeat the Find, but look for 9.52. Remember in the "Look at" to check all three options: Keys, Values, Data.

In the past, I have seen a window appear, asking if the user wants to remove a certain entry from Add/Remove, when something was listed that could not be located when trying to remove it. It's been at least a couple of years since it had appeared.

I am down to 9.52, in the Add/Remove, which cannot be found, but hangs around, there.
I have no need for Opera, so, nothing else (Opera-like) is there, any more.

Regarding the version of Opera that is still listed in Add/Remove, have you tried reinstalling that same version, run it once, then uninstall?

To be precise, if you ask me, Opera9.52 is in the Add?Remove. I tried to download it and install it, but the link downloaded 9.60. So, for a while I had an extra version. I was able to remove 9.60, as well as all other versions from Add/Remove, with the exception of 9.52.
My computer shows no traces of Opera files, although there may be something in the Registry. I had posted at the Opera boards, but lost interest in this. If I figure out how to eliminate Opera, I will report. And, only then I may consider reinstalling the newest version.

If the chkdsk itself stopped (original message), I believe that would indicate a hardware issue, not an issue with Opera itself.

The hard drive could be failing.

As for me, there is, still, an Opera9.52 in the Add/Remove, but I cannot do a thing with, being told that it is on a removable drive. When I used the Repair function to redownload v.9.52, I am sent to a nonexistant location, so 9.52 cannot be redownloaded (and then installed, and, finally, uninstalled). There is only about 5 MB which I can't remove, but this does it, for Opera.

I was able to download 9.52 from another FTP, but no luck in doing anything with it. After the installation begins, and the installer.msi is dumped who knows where, I get, again, the same old window telling me that Opera is in Neverland.

I must close this ridiculous story, by saying that, indeed, I was able to remove Opera9.52.
I must not paid close attention when I went into Regedit. Find Opera gave me nothing more than a opera icon .gif key. But 9.52 gave me several keys which I did not recognize.
An installer key showed Opera with mouseover, but not otherwise, and I found an Opera 9.52 reg_sz key, as well. I deleted both, and the line in Add/Remove is gone.
Now, I must try again with the latest Opera version.
