One of the updates that I was asked to download is called "Dr.Web virus checker" or something like that. I was wondering how it is used and looked for it in my App folder. Couldn't find it. A search with EasyFind.app could ot find it either.

Can someone please give me a clue about this phantom program?

There is a legitimate freeware anti-virus called Dr Web Cure-it. It was once recommended to me by Slysoft & I have used it as an on demand scanner from time to time. However, afaik it is NOT a Firefox plugin! The real program can be found here:

What you're describing MAY be malware.

The way you put it, it seems that the request came from the Mozilla site. As "geffr" said be careful. It may have been a malware attempt. But, there is a plugin/link add-on

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that! Does Dr Web also provide the built in download virus checker that ships with 3.x?

Reading thre facts at the add-on website, there is no link to the download virus checker, but nothing more than a link to the online virus scanner (I am familiar with HouseCall, and use it to double check some suspicious scans).

I was not very clear about the "website". I meant the add-on website.
The add-on creates a link to the Dr.Web online scanner, which in some way is like HouseCall.
There is no need to have the installable Dr.Web, and if installed, the Firefox add-on is redundant. Is this a bit clearer?
