Netscape 7 issue......

Postby Dickerson » Fri 23 Aug, 2002 3:23 pm

:? I recently had to create another profile after my original one was corrupted (after loading both N7pr1 and Moz1.0 together without creating different profiles for each). I was able to migrate my mail and bookmark files to the new profile, and the mail migration worked like a charm.

Here is my issue - I can not get my bookmarks to display on my PERSONAL TOOLBAR. I can use the BOOKMARKS dropdown menu and they are listed there under PERSONAL TOOLBAR FOLDER. I have checked the view to make sure that is enabled. I have selected the folder as my Personal Toolbar Folder. I have tried to drop and drag the book marks onto the bar, but none of them will display on the tool bar. Nothing works.

Can anybody give me any ideas on why this would be and how to correct it?

For those of you on the newsgroup, sorry you had to see this twice. Just trying to get the question to as many people as possible.

Thanks in advance...

Not sure, because I haven't looked at its behaviour or its source, nor do I use it, but I belive the Personal Toolbar Folder has special formatting, so if you deleted it and recreated it, it won't work. I suggest you import your bookmarks into a temporary profile and set everything up, moving what you want into the Personal Toolbar with Manage Bookmarks and then replacing your bookmarks.html.

First of all, do not use AOL to reply. The stupid thing kicked me out twice, when I clicked on Quote.
As for the problem, being the KJing of Profiles, I have a lot of subjects, and I can easily copy another Profile, or ,even cut and paste one from a dead profile. But, I was able to Copy(not Cut) and Paste, or most likely drap and drop from Manage bookmarks. I just tested in Mozilla 1.1b, and it should work in NS7 or Moz1.0.
I had to do this when k-meleon 0.5, literally stole the contents of my Personal Toolbar.

Thank you all.....

It is starting to sound like I made a mistake when I tried to substitute my Personal Toll Bar Folder that I migrated from the corrupted Profile over the one that the new profile came with. Lesson learned.

I will try creating a new profile tomorrow (today), and instead of deleting the folder that gets created with the new profile; I will drop and drag the bookmarks that are in my folder into the one created.

Should I report the results back here, or does anybody care?

Thanks for all the help. While I was hoping for a solution short of having to start over, at least I know what I need to do now.

OK, here is what happened.

I copied my Bookmarks file and the mail folder to a Backup folder, just to get them out of the way. Then I deleted every profile I had a folder for. When I finished, it was as if Netscape had never been on my PC.

Then I went to the Profile Manager, created a brand new profile. Once that was accomplished, I imported the Bookmarks file. Now I have two files marked Personal Toolbar Folder. Then I opened Manage Bookmarks, and dropped and dragged the bookmarks from my folder to the one created with the new profile. Worked like a charm. All the bookmarks are on the toolbar just where they belong.

When I imported the addresses from my 4.8, it all worked great also.

One more thing happened that I found odd. All along, the preferences box was sized incorrectly, to short on the right side, cutting buttons and text off. This has been a persistant issue with 6.2.x and then 7pr1. However, once I dumped all the old profiles, created the new one, the preferences box is perfect.

This would leave me to believe that all along I have had at least one, if not more, corrupted profiles. Starting over seems to have fixed most, if not all, of the issues.

Thanks to all the help and suggestions. It got me going down the right tracks.
