Installing Itunes 9.02 for 64 Bit Windows 7

Postby humpd » Wed 11 Nov, 2009 12:30 pm

I am having problems installing Itunes for Windows 7 64 bit. I DO have the 64 bit installer. I noticed that when the Itunes begins to install, it wants to go to the Program Files (x86). Shouldn't the path for the installation go to a different folder, like Program Files? Or is there a folder specifically for 64 bit applications? Please let me know if the installation problem is simply changing the path to Program Files or to another folder OR if I have to wait for either Apple or MS to fix this problem. Thank you.

As far as I know, the 64-bit installer for iTunes will only install 64-bit drivers for the iPod and iPhone. iTunes itself is still a 32-bit app, and should be installed in with your other 32-bit apps in the [tt]Program Files (x86)[/tt] folder.

OK. I have gotten rid of anything left over from my Vista Itunes software and will allow the 64 bit software to install in the (x86) folder. Thanks for getting back to me on this.

Just to close this out, it worked. Interestinglhy, the 64 bit installer put Itunes in both the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders. Itunes must sill run as a 32 bit application.

iTunes is a 32-Bit Application.
All the 64-Bit installer does is include 64Bit drivers for iPod and iPhone as Don said. It will install in your (x86) programs folder and run as a 32bit application.

I tried iTunes a while back. I ran it on two machines for about 6 weeks. Then, I got rid of it. First, the store: way more expensive for the same albums than Amazon.

Second, on one machine, iTune installed two filters into the Vista registry that disabled my optical drive. When I went to Tech Support at Dell about the drive, the tech asked if I was running iTunes. I said no longer,

He said, but you did run it, so I am going to look in your registry for a high filter and a low filter. They are the probable culprits.

Well, it took him less than ten minutes. He knew just where to go. Bingo, I had my optical drive back.

So, no iTunes for me, ever, any machine.

I run Winamp especially for streams from Live365, WMP11 for my music library, and Zune for video. No problems.

Dell Tech Support was smart to look for the filters. There is a (now 13-page) long [sdt=9200]thread[/sdt], presently 2nd in the Windows topic list, on filter-caused problems for optical drives.

Antony, or anyone: Shouldn't the Uninstall process for iTunes also clear these Registry filter entries? Or is it not that simple?

After uninstalling iTunes run a registry cleaner, and it should get rid of the unused keys.

I would love to use another program besides iTunes, but one problem. iPod.

Yeah, I have 5.49GB of music, I listen to all of it for the most part.
I've got three videos, and one full legnth movie.

All of this fits on my 30GB iPod 5th Gen with Video.

I've been thinking about getting a Zune, but idk, my friend has one, and I found it to be a little on the un-user friendly side.

I have now run Itunes on a Vista OS and Windows 7. I have not had any problems with the optical drive in either case. I am wondering if Apple (or MS) has solved this problem with the latest builds of Itunes.

So does MediaMonkey, but when not using iTunes I've yet to find a program that also syncs the album art.
