PlayStation Network not accepting credit card?

Postby Antony » Wed 18 Nov, 2009 7:29 am

Hello all,

I hope we have some PlayStation gamers here.

Does anyone have any problem entering billing information to the PlayStation Network? I checked and checked again with all the information I entered, but PSN keeps telling me that the information is invalid.

For the reference, back in 2008, I was able to enter my credit card information, and successfully bought a few games from the PlayStation Store. However, the credit card on file has expired, and I am unable to update it. (It's a MasterCard from the same bank, not a debit nor a prepaid/gift credit card.)

I have a Debit Master Card and it works fine on the Playstation Store. I've never had a problem with that.

Mandrake, is that a Commonwealth Bank, if you don't mind me asking?

No, I'm with Westpac. If you continue having problems I'd ring your credit card company and ask them about it. Also be sure to double check all your details, the card number and the security number on the back of the card.

I called the bank, my cards are fine. I used them physically today.

I also called PlayStation Technical support line, still waiting for the call back.

Just a followup to the issue.

PlayStation Support Centre called me for more information, then emailed me with following
Thank you for your recent call.

We have investigated the issue you have raised regarding the credit card you have attempted not accessing the PlayStation Network. After investigating this it has been found that this issue was related to the issuing bank not allowing the card access, therefore you will need to speak to them for further information regarding this.

Regards,

PlayStation Support Centre

After receiving that. I tried again with my Commonwealth Bank MasterCard and filling all information in lower case, it worked.

Of course, I did contact the bank, and the bank said that my cards were fine.

Well, I can buy games from PlayStation Network now.

Curiosity: The field that you had to enter in lower case - was it a password or similar data? Or was it data that normally one would expect to be case-independent? If this latter, then it would indicate sloppy coding on the part of the Network. And was this requirement documented?

I had no idea if the lower case was the solution.
Before getting the reply from PlayStation, I searched internet, and I am not the only one facing this issue. I found many people said that the billing address must be identical to the one on credit card statement (i.e. no spelling variations such as ST or STREET, and should use the same case).

The fields I entered in lower cases are: my name (card holder's name), all fields for address (billing address). The name on my credit card and address on statement are printed in all capital.

To review ---
The card is printed in upper case.
When you use the card at/with Commonwealth directly it is accepted. Since not stated otherwise, the implication is that upper case is accepted. (Can you test with lower case and mixed case?)
When you used uppercase for PlayStation, it was rejected as invalid.
And PlayStation said "this issue was related to the issuing bank not allowing the card access".

Conclusion ---
Commonwealth has two data validation interface routines.
- The validation of 'direct' use accepts upper (and probably also lower) case.
- The validation of 'client' (PlayStation, for one) use accepts lower case only.
Therefore, the PlayStation statement is correct: it is a bank problem.
The bank needs to revise their processes, to
- change the validation routines to do identical acceptances, or
- document for their users their (apparently illogical) requirements.

Before jumping to the conclusion, I think I'd better mention some additional information I did not mention earlier.

Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) upgraded my credit card since I first signed in with PlayStation Network, which means it is a different card number instead of just new expiry date.
According to my conversation with the Bank, Australia does not allow address verification on credit cards, US companies does. However, my billing address is as printed on my credit card statement.
Further, CommBank recently released American Express card on top of MasterCard and Visa credit cards. I might have been locked out by PlayStation Network due to trying to use American Express card, before I tried to use MasterCard.

PlayStation Technical support told me that I would be locked out for 24 hours due to a few wrong attempts, something like 5 times.

I've been entering my credit card information elsewhere with proper case (mixed upper and lower cases, as in normal spelling style), and it all worked fine.

I personally do not think that upper/lower case is an issue. The only reason I pointed out was because all other recommendations (on other gaming forums) all suggest using ALL CAP in entering if the address in statement is printed in ALL CAP. Obviously, those who get through successfully did not bother posting online for help.
