Tab menu

Postby ray5450 » Fri 05 Feb, 2010 7:05 pm

I noticed that the right-click menu on tabs has key shortcuts available as there are letters underlined. For example, Close Tab, the "C" is underlined. What is the key that goes with it?

Thanks.

If you select any of the menus and leave the mouse pointer on the menu title (File, Edit, View, etc.), pressing the underlined letter shown in the menu list will have the same effect as if you chose the same item using the mouse.

I, never, noticed that, and tested the "feature". Pretty useless., unless the mouse got caught in a trap (in such case you have to remember the shortcuts).

Is there a key, or key combination, that will open this tab menu for the tab having focus?

So, you want to open the tab menu, without clicking on a tab. In other words, using the keyboard only? Aside from the fact that I have no interest in working with these shortcuts, as I said before, I am using Google Chrome which does not have the same shortcuts, so I can't even test what you can see in a dropdown. My hands are on the mouse all the time, while I use the keyboard only when I type. Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question.

The keyboard short to open a new tab is Ctr T

Here is a list of keyboard short cuts for Firefox. Hope this helps.

I hope that someone explain what is the importance of "tab focus". There are addons, for that purpose, but I am getting thoroughly confused about what ray5450 needs.
CntrlT will open a new tab, but what does
open this tab menu for the tab having focus
mean? This site lists several addons in the Tab management section.

To Fulvio: Why are you using Google Chrome...are you just trying it out, or something?

"Tab with focus" means the the tab currently being viewed, or in view.

To James: It still seems there should be something to open the tab menu without clicking on a tab, but yes, that list is very helpful, thanks.

By the way, this is not something I would use all the time, but I have found that occasionally, a large website or one "busy with stuff", or some other unknown reason will freeze the mouse, usually temporarily, but sometimes longer than 5 minutes. If I can manage to eventually "coax" the mouse over to open the menu and close the tab, it fixes right away. I have found that the keyboard commands always work at this time when the mouse doesn't, and that is very convenient.

Why are you using Google Chrome...are you just trying it out, or something?

I like to try some browsers and new versions of existing browsers. But, the situation is different with Google Chrome. I am, still, concerned that it may be a receptacle for Google spyware (other people share the same concern), but the new v.4 started incorporating addons, and I, generally, prefer Google Chrome, and would not hesitate dumping Firefox, if Firefox continues fluondering, as it is for me. I never tried to use the keyboard only, but, too often, I have to hit the reload button of Firefox to load several pages. I have never had to do that with Google Chrome.

Ray,

Thanks for the explanation. I had focused on the words "opening" and "tab" rather than "menu" and so I missed the point of your original inquiry. I now see your dilemma and can see no keyboard short cut to opening the tab menu. I suppose there should be one although I admit that I, for one, would probably not make use of it. Hey, we're all different with different needs. Hope you find and answer.

I am just wondering if there are there other things that Firefox is doing or not doing that you consider floundering.

Floundering may not be the correct word. But, definitely, not improving. For some reason Firefox is a hulking program, and addons make it worse. Of course, 116 MB usage is nothing with a new computer, but my computer's RAM is only 512 MB, and not worth improving, due to its age. Firefox can and has been using over 200 MB of memory, and everything slows down. Seamonkey, for instance uses only 60 MB, and it has Mail!

Hmm... A few years ago, I switched from Netscape to Firefox for that exact reason. Netscape seems kind of extinct, now. You may be right.

The version of Firefox you're using is also extinct, since Mozilla no longer provide security updates for Firefox 2.

The only reason for sticking with FF2.x is if you have, still Win98!
