Netscape 6.2 Webmail

Postby Cathyb0 » Fri 07 Oct, 2005 9:11 pm

Hi,

I absolutely hate the new browser mail interface with Netscape 8.0. So, I installed Eudora, but I can't access my Netscape webmail with it because of the proprietary set-up. Then I installed Netscape 7.1 and it somehow screwed up my internet connection and I had to uninstall it and reinstall my dialer. It seems like there shouldn't be any connection between the browser and an internet connection, but this happened twice, and I couldn't even access the internet using non-browser interfaces. My internet connection still doesn't work right, but it's better. Besides that, from what I remember I was very unhappy with Netscape 7.x mail when I upgraded from 6.x because of all the new bugs and the slowness. Then I downloaded Netscape 6.2 and it hangs when connecting. I was able to create the account fine, but it says "connecting to server" forever when I try to send or receive mail. I can send and receive POP3 mail, though. Can Netscape webmail still be accessed with Netscape 6.2 mail?

Does anybody else think that Netscape has gone way downhill since being taken over by AOL? What good is new functionality if its so buggy that you can't use it, and what good is functionality if the user can't configure it? AOL's philosophy is similar to Microsoft's. "We know what is good for the user", not "the user knows what is good for themselves." :(

Cathy,
I pretty much agree with your evaluation of Netscape/AOL, but you must be doing something wrong to get, or not get the results you get.
NS6.2 was buggy, 7.1 was a bit better, with mail, while 7.2 had been pretty stable, but is now obsolete, since AOL chose to go with NS8.
You mention installing, and downloading, but I can't see anything about uninstalling a program. If you have more than one, and you have been using them with the same Profile, I would expect problems.
You also mention Netscape Webmail in the title, but never again. Netscape mail is not webmail, although, in theory you should be able to set up its webmail accounts in any NS6/7. I have given up doing it, since Webmail accounts have been behaving atrociously, even on the website.
I suggest that you stop trying all sort of programs just to get Webmail.
You may wish to take a look at another website, and all the Webmail gripes.
I have a way to receive Webmail, but it is a bit tricky, and, you must use another SMTP to send. I don't think that it is worthwhile.
Use the website.

Yes, I do think I'm doing something wrong, that's why I posted.

I disagree. I have gone through the progression of Netscape versions as they came out and I was perfectly happy with 6.2 mail, much less so (very dismayed) with 7.1 and even less so with 7.2.

I specified separate installation directories when I installed so I don't think they would be using the same profile, but I could be wrong.

I am trying to set up webmail, Netscape.net.

I haven't had any trouble with the website, just hate the interface and want to download my e-mails to my computer and use an e-mail program.

As of yesterday, I am working on the method you mention, which I assume is FreePOPs. It sort of works. I was able to download half of my webmail messages, but now it isn't working. The connection times out or it says "Network Error". I really like Thunderbird, though, and I hope I can get things working. I really don't want to use the website and if that's the only way I can access my mail, I will give up on Netscape webmail.

I will answer backwards. Yes, I am using freePOPs, and it has worked only once, if freePOPs is not in the Startup. If you don't see the freePOPs icon in your systray, it won't work. You can open the freePOPs folder in your Start Menu folder: C:\Documents and Settings\Fulvio Perini\Start Menu\Programs\FreePOPs, and paste it to the Startup folder.
You can have programs installed in different directories, but you must have separate profiles. If you use one profile for a number of still installed programs, any update will look worse. You can have multiple profiles for one program, but not the other way around.

Yes, I figured out that FreePOPs had to be started before it would work. I discovered that the reason the rest of my mail won't download is that Thunderbird thinks it has already downloaded that mail. Guess my connection quit in the middle of while it was downloading a large mailbox. My connection only works intermittently (not a Netscape profile issue because I can't even ping the server and other software doesn't work). I have to get my connection issues worked out before I can figure out what is due to FreePOPs/Thunderbird and what is due to my connection. I suspect both aren't working correctly because I can time out trying to get mail from my webmail in Thunderbird then turn right around and download mail from my other POP3 account with no problem. Have downloaded the latest Netscape.lua. I think I am going to go with DSL because I have searched the internet, the Netscape knowledgebase and contacted Netscape support multiple times, all to no avail. I think I have some kind of SPN or port conflict, a gnarly problem to figure out. I might try a free trial of another dial-up just out of curiosity to see if it would work. I am getting very frustrated.

I didn't know about the profiles. I thought the profile would be created in a different directory if I specified a different installation directory, but evidently that isn't the case. I created a new profile for Netscape 6.2 but I still can't get or send webmail. It says "connecting to server" forever. When I launch 6.2 it launches a product activation screen that can't find the webpage. I assume this is an old registration feature and has nothing to do with it not working? There isn't a profile manager option for 7.1 or 8.0 and I couldn't find an option in the menu for 8.0 to create a new profile, so I don't know how to do that for these versions. Profiles isn't even on their help menu index. 7.1 won't launch.

Thanks for your help. This is a great forum.

Cathy,
I am sorry to hear that things are not under control. I, pretty much solved my Netscape Webmail, by opening an aim.com account, with exactly the same username/password. Aim.com, at least is more stable. However, I still have Netscape Webmail accessible from FreePOPs. It is just crazy.
I had been in contact with the fellow at AOL, and, I have given up.

It Works!

Postby Cathyb0 » Thu 13 Oct, 2005 12:04 am

I deleted my popstate file in Thunderbird and it now works! Yeah! I guess the popstate file got corrupted when my connection quit in the middle of downloading. Now if I could just get my connection working . . . Thanks Fulvio for your input.
