Identical Profiles

Postby moosie » Fri 28 Oct, 2005 4:12 pm

Ramona, in New Profiles, I (we) created an identical profile for another computer that was running XP also. After checking the new one out, it downloaded the new mail and so did the original computer. The computers are on a wireless network. At the time, the computers were adjacent physically. After moving the old computer to its new location. I checked it again and it would send and receive messages as expected. going to the other machine, I found that I could send mail but no way could I get messages, only a cryptic connected 12X.x.x.x. The old computer would indicate either "No New Messages" or say 2 new messages or whatever number. I went to the trouble of printing out the server settings and comparing every item but all were identical. Is there a way to have both machines download mail?

The most elementary check is in the Mail|accounts|Server settings. do both computers has Leave Messages on server checked? Long time ago, i had the surprise no new mail in my home computer, after I had checked mail at work. My work computer had the box unchecked. It woul be too strange to have everything, apparently, set up ok, and no new mail, and no warnings of any type.

Hi moosie,

As Fulvio says, Open the Mail window:
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
Select: Leave Messages on Server

That should allow you to download and read messages on either PC. I use this method on one of my Accounts, and it works for me. However, I really know nothing about a home network.

Identical Profiles

Been there, done that. Tried on one computer, both computers, etc. Until this morning, I could browse but not access mail. Now, I can no longer browse on the recalcitrant computer. I really don't think it is caused by being on the network, but I will go back through the system again. If necessary, as a last resort, I will uninstall Netscape and profiles and start over. Don't worry, I'm not going to do it today. :?

moosie,

Uninstalling Netscape will do nothing. The problem is within your Mail component, and therefore your Profile. Leaving the Mail on the Server on both PC's should allow you to access the same messages on both PC's.

Which PC is the disobedient one? Also, didn't you say that once you moved the PC's from their adjacent positions that the problem began with the mail?

Identical Profiles

I hope you can follow this :
I had both computers upstairs in my den for the original setup to copy the profile. The new computer is the one connected by Ethernet cabling to the router. It is the problem child. Because all the Netscape info was on the old computer and I was familiar with everything there, I used that oldie but goodie for all file xfers, etc. The 2 computers were not connected by hard wiring at all. After the successful profile install, the internet could be browsed by both AND the e-mail worked on both.

Then, the old computer was relegated to the location downstairs. The connection signal was very low but it is completely functional in that location. I have since moved the computer to a better position and the strength, though somewhat low, is quite reliable and the computer is completely functional on the internet. It is the new computer that has an excellent wireless signal that is Peck's bad boy.

I also have something on the new computer that is apparently a relic of the dialup network. Every time I try to access the mail server, a dialup connect to the isp pops up. That stops any connection from working. There must be something in the profile that does this since the new machine was never in my old dialup network.

I don't know what are the required settings for your ISP, but, generally, you will find some clue in your Preferences|Advanced|Proxies.
I get my cable connection by "direct connection to the internet", although it may not be the only way. You should get word from your ISP for proper set up. Look at Proxies first. How did information about dialup got on the new computer? All information was in one place, initially, was it not.
Anyway, given time your identical profiles will not be identical, but access to mail should be.
