How does one extract files from Netscape 8's cache?

Postby Goldeneye » Sat 12 Nov, 2005 3:24 pm

In the past I recall that Netscape 6/7 used a cache folder, and the cached files were in their original format (something like FGH172351.jpg for a JPG file)

Now Netscape 8's cache has file names with *no* extensions whatsoever, making it much harder to distinguish which type of files are which.

Is it even possible to extract files in their original type from the Netscape 8 cache?

If this helps, I am using Windows XP SP2.

Thanks again!

I know it was like you say in NS4.8 or lower, but not in Netscape7.2. So, I doubt that it was in Netscape6 or 7. I don't even attempt, but if you can figure this out, try to open the file with an appropriate Viewer. I right click on the icon, or whatever is there, and my Irfan View tells that it is a .jpg file with the incorrect extention, and, if I want to rename it. It works, but is it worth it?

Use about:cache (Type as a URL). This will list all the items in the cache with their address and name from the web server, and you can search the list via Ctrl-F

If you want to save something from the current page that is just not accessible for saving, eg a Flash movie, there's a shortcut - providing you're viewing in Firefox mode.

Tools --> Page Info --> Media Tab

then scroll the list to the item you want and click Save As.

Note: This doesn't work in IE mode and as IE Page View is almost devoid of useful function.....

The is by far the easiest way to save those Flash bedtime stories for the little ones.....

I learned something new today. "about:cache" is as satisfying as going through the list of meaningless letter and number combinations.
Why has there been such a change? I, always felt that Cache was Trash. I am positive now. Anyone knows what is the Cache Trash folder for?

From what I understand, the Cache Trash folder is created after a crash or whenever the program wasn't shut down properly. (I saw I had a Cache Trash folder in Firefox recently when the power went out.)

Apparently, the idea is that something the cache might have contributed to a crash.

I never had a crash, and, I have profiles for NS7.2 (2), Mozilla, Seamonkey, and two Firefox. Each one has an empty Cash Trash folder.
I suppose that all programs may have not been shut down properly, at one toime, but I never found anything in that folder.
However, a newly created, and never used profile for Firefox does not have a Cache Trash folder, and, another one does not even have a Cache folder.

Saving Flash movies via Page Info

This is the current bedtime favourite, Georgina the Giraffe. A good mix of you reading aloud and some embedded voices. There are plenty of other here.

Once its loaded, choose Tools --> Page Info --> Media Tab and then scroll down to the Flash movie (listed as type 'embedded'). and click Save As to save for later use (remember save the big flash movies as the menu on the left is also in flash)

This way they can then click on the stories on the desktop without needing to go online.

Two bugs make this process harder:-
  1. You can't re-size the Page Info popup. This is bug in NS8 - click here to file your complaint.
  2. Clicking on the Type column doesn't sort the list - This is a longstanding bug in Firefox, click here to add your voice
