7.01 bookmarks issue

Postby richg » Sun 29 Dec, 2002 1:30 pm

Hi All

I am having an issue with some of my bookmarks disappearing. I have a 1.2g mobo, 256m ram, w98se and 7.01, the full browser. I shut my computer down and the next time I booted up the system, some of my bookmarks were gone. I clicked manage bookmarks, search bookmarks and I can search and find the missing bookmarks but I cannot figure out how to get them all together like I originally had them. In fact, within some folders, some bookmarks are gone. I can find any missing ones by the bookmark search option. What have I done to have this happen??? How can I prevent this from happening in the future??? I have been using Netscape since version 2 and this is something I have not seen before. This is the second time this has happened and the first time I had to rebuild my bookmarks which was not fun.
By the way version 6 was HORRIBLE. I went back to 4.79 and waited until 7.01.
Thank you.

What do you mean "some" of your bookmarks?
Do you mean all those you "added" were gone but the default (from Netscape) were still there, then it is likely that your changes in bookmark did not get saved.
OR if you crash Netscape in the end of the session, bookmarks might not be saved.

OR somehow your bookmark file got re-written.

Just curious. Are you using a newly created profile for 7.01, or have you tried to recycle one used by v.6. By the way, 6.0 was downright unaaceptable, worse than the preview releases, 6.01 was usable. Anything after that improved, though lacking important features. I went through the entire thing, and I never found 6.2.3, the last one of the 6 series, to be particularly buggy, although if there was any problem, I saw recommendation to upgrade to 7. Just to set records straight.
In summary, if you are using a profile from a version 6, you are lucky that you have anything. As fpr going back to a 4.x, I never left, and I have been recommending people to stick to it, if nothing else for mail.

7.01 bookmarks

Postby richg » Sun 29 Dec, 2002 11:47 pm

Ok. First of all when I found out the 6.0 was no good, I uninstalled it and reinstalled 4.79. I put my bookmark file in a temp folder. The bookmark file was originally created in 4.6. I downloaded the full 7.01 version and it worked ok. Twice when I booted up my computer I found all I had where the folders with bookmarks in them I created sometime ago. I found a couple of missing folders and all the bookmarks that were never in folders because I could not think of a category for them. I laboriously searched and copied the missing bookmarks and recreated my complete set of bookmarks the first time. While searching for a missing folder, I noticed not all the bookmarks were in the folder. I searched by name for a couple I rememberd and found them also. The first time was about a month ago. I booted up the computer last night and essentially the same issue.
The default bookmarks I do not use. I get the impression no one has ever seen this issue before. I guess it is time to go back to 4.79 or IE. I am becoming disillusioned with Netscape.

Frustrated

Richard,
Just create a new profile and create some nice bookmarks within it, then the new bookmark will be fine, and you can copy the newly created bookmark to your current Netscape Profile.

You can even try to open the bookmark file by netscape and see its structure.

Richard: I want to make sure I understand what you are saying. I think you said you can find your bookmarks when you go to "manage bookmarks" and do a search. That means that they are saved. I also think you said that when you just call up bookmarks, that you cannot see them (as though they are not saved) but you DO find them when you go to do a search. Have you gone into "mamage bookmarks) and double clicked on every folder to see what is saved there? Also, have you gone back copied the saved bookmarks in your temp file and then pasted them in the C:\Windows\Application Data\ Mozilla\ your profile? FINALLY, when I installed NS 7.0 for the first time, I found my old NS 4.7 profiles listed when I booted NS up to run. It is possible that the bookmarks are stored in one of the old profiles and NS 7 does not seem to copy those files automatically. If you have the old profiles for earlier versions of NS, you must manually go to them and COPY those files to the NEW NS 7.01 profiles. Once your bookmarks and all there, delete the OLD profiles.

If you uninstalled 6.0, which was not a standard uninstall, the Profile remained, as it does for Netscapes old and new. This is the mistake that people make, thinking that an old profile can be used as is. So, if you used the same profile, you will have a problem sooner than later. If you started with a brand new Profile and had this problem, create one, anyway, as Antony suggested.
If you do not know the path to the Profiles folder, yell for help.

7.01 bookmarks

Postby richg » Mon 30 Dec, 2002 12:20 pm

To All
Thank you for trying. This stuff with profiles is more than I care to do. I am a user not a geek. I will just uninstall 7.01, start out again with 4.79 and stick with 4.79. I will have to make a complete new set of bookmarks. It will take time but I know what use to work.

Rich,

If you do have the backup for your bookmarks.....

Copy the Netscape Communicator 4.79 bookmark.htm file, then rename it to bookmarks.html. Place the bookmarks.html in this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Profile Name\xxxxxxxx.slt
(depending on your OS)

When Windows asks if you wish to replace the existing file, answer yes.

This process is reversible, i.e., 7.0 to 4.79.
