Netscape: originally ran 4.79 (via download), bumped to 6.0 (via disk) years later, installed 7 and overinstalled 7.02 thereafter.
All was fine except for the folders occasionally going into an irreversible Arabic character-coding (wherein I lost all email within them and could never delete the folder). Five weeks ago sending email would lock up the OS completely - no cursor movement even. I tried the old v6 and v4.79 and all did the same thing. I thought it was a system folder thing and saved off my System folder and reinstalled 9.2.2 MacOS. Still locking up. Reinstalled 6 and 7 and 7.02... I took it in to MacGuys/eMacGuys.com in Pleasant Hill, CA and he replaced my hard drive. He never got my Netscape working for browser, email in or out. I cannot invoke due to the message: "The profile you selected was created with a previous version of Netscape and must b copied...". I assume that something like the multiple saved system folders with multiple preference folders with multiple registry files is messing me up. I can see the .slt and .sbd entities. My 6-8 years of email (research and projects) are all there. He pulled my email over into a new login user on my new G5 iMac that is having no problems running Netscape 7.2, but he pulled them into the Apple mail program (as I say after a separate login) and he only got my Saved Mail Folder's sub-folders from J-Z). This is worse than when I brought it to him. I need those files and would've preferred pulling them via file sharing into the G5 as last resort. The good thing is that they're there. The bad things is that they're all over the place now and that I still cannot use my G3's Netscape 7.02 mwhen that system has a new drive and was going to be an email and doc storage system only. Please help me understand what files are colliding, what is necessary to run, where those files/folders are, ewwhat changed in respect from 4.x to 6.x to 7.x so that I know what I can delete and what I need to save. I would like to get rid of everything except the filters, folders, address book, bookmarks, and actual email and then reinstall. Possible? Thanks, Chris Gray rasputin@teleport.com
