Exporting email from Netscape 7.0 to Outlook XP/Express

Postby ShaunaTech » Mon 30 Dec, 2002 10:24 am

I need to export email (Inbox and subfolders) from Netscape 7.0 into an application like Outlook XP or Outlook Express. Is there a simple process for this?

Thanks!

Hi ShaunaTech,

In a word, no! Microsoft hasn't updated the import for newer versions of Netscape. For that matter, Netscape hasn't updated their import for the newer versions of OE. Neither recognizes anything newer than version 4.0 of their competitor.

Your best bet is to install Netscape 4.79, and copy your 7.0 Mail Files (without the .msf extensions) to Netscape 4.79 Messenger. Then you can use OE to import the files from 4.79 Messenger.

Close Netscape, and copy the files in Windows Explorer.
FROM: C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\mailaccountname
(depending on your OS)
TO: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername\Mail

Once the files are copied from 7.0 to 4.79, then open 4.79. The index files will be created (.snm). Then you can import from OE.

Michael Santovec also has some small utilities on his site for email file conversion, but again, not simple:

Here is a utility with instructions that you can use to convert the Netscape / Eudora MBOX format mail files to OE4 MBX files: http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/files/e2m.zip

You can then use one of the following two programs to convert the OE4
MBX files to EML files (one message per file). Then you can drag-and-drop the EML files into open OE5+ mail folders.

OUTDUMP.EXE - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_sa...les/outdump.zip

If you successfully get your mail files exported from Netscape to either
of the Microsoft email apps like Outlook or OE, please be aware of the
serious privacy and security issues involving Outlook/OE and MSIE.

I fully support DJGM in his caution to your using IE/OE. You will have to be constantly on the alert for MS Critical Security update/patches. I have 18 MS Security Bulletins in my Mail that I have received just since September '02!

Hi,

I know this is an very old topic - but I have the same problem right now... But where are I'm able to find the old version 4.79 of Netscape?

Isn't it possible to convert my Netscape 7.0-e-mails til Outlook 2000 without using Netscape 4.79?

Best regards,
Kasper

Netscape Communicator 4.7x versions are available here:
http://sillydog.org/narchive/full4.php

You don't need the 4.79 version, specifically. Any 4.xx version should work.

As the others said, you will have to redownload 4.x, set up its mail, and go through the process described above, and then you should be able to import into whatever.
It is inconvenient, I grant but Outlook and Outlook Express are Miocrosoft products, and Netscape is not. And, since Netscape has been continuously evolvingfrom 6.0 on, there is no one step way to Import mail into NS4.x. You have to do it manually.
As for Outlook Express 6 security, I got a surprise the other day, when it considered a simple flash file to be unsafe, and blocked it, and wiould not even list the type of file. There is a setting to get around this. But, the moral of the story is that you are damned if you do or if you don't..
Mail from OE6 is exported with no problem into NS7.x.

1. I cannot see any of the several downloads which would do the job. All downloads are for recovery of existing functions of different Microsoft programs.
2. I cannot make out that they are free. All are in a purchase list.
