Netscape 7.2 compromised by McAfee Spamkiller download???

Postby lindenhills » Fri 13 Jan, 2006 10:24 pm

This one's a mess, please help me!

I upgraded to the new Spamkiller 7, works fine.

Now, suddenly my Netscape 7.2 email access is totally screwed up. Several things might happen: I may get an error message stating the STAT etc etc is all wrong, cannot connect.

Or I may find that the server setting has been changed from the desired "pop.purehost.com" to a most mysterious string of numbers "127.0.0.1" which means nothing to me and I have no idea where it comes from.

But no matter how often I try to change back to my correct server setting, the string of numbers somehow reappears, creating yet another error message "Sending of login did not succeed. Mail server pop.purehost.com responded: login failed."

To top it off, no log-on window appears as it usually would to permit me to enter my password.

I did check the settings window: down at the bottom where there is a "browse" option the string of info reads: Application Data\Mozilla...Mail\pop-purehost-5.com" and I do not know what the "5" means or where it came from. Does this make any difference?

Meanwhile, the computer continues its attempt to connect to download email, and I cannot make it stop unless I close down Netscape altogether....jeepers creepers!

What a mess!!! What has happened? Can anyone help me untangle this mess? I'm counting on my dear 'Scapers out there to solve this mytery for me.

127.0.0.1

This is the Spam Killer having attempted, if not succeeded to take over as a server. Norton exhibits that number, and so do others.
Just kill that inept spam killer, which is unnecessary, and you should be ok.
Is "purehost.com" the name of your ISP server? The settings were, probably, changed by SpamKiller.

It's just amazing when our darkest fears are confirmed!

What you describe makes perfect sense. And, since posting last night, I have made some interesting experiments, the one which worked perfectly was closing out of Netscape altogether before attempting to use Spamkiller. SPK7 then opened up Explorer instead as a base browser! Bad news there, huh? So, I have disabled SPK7 for strictly manual use and will wash my email a few times every day manually. A bit silly but very workable.

Thanks as always for the best common sense on the planet. I love posting to this site! I always get the right answers from you.

Glad to hear that things worked. It is unfortunate, that McAfee has followed Norton, and probably other Security software in taking over programs, mail clients in particular, without knowing how the programs work, or with inadequate support.
I am using the Zone Alarm free firewall, and, don't dare upgrading past 6.0, because of several reported problems.
For ISP mail, it is being screened, and, I have seen it 100% successful, so far, so I don't want to even receive it. I used to have problems with one username, which stopped about 90% of the spam, but 10% of nearly 100/day, was annoying. So, I dropped that username.
In spite of their claims that it blocks Spam, I get junk at Netscape Webmail only (i.e. @netscape.net). In the past 10 days, 100% of my mail, there was spam. So, I will let them do it, if they enjoy themselves.
But, if you are dealing with POP accounts, the NS7.2 Junk controls can take care of spam, up to a point. It is so many simpler to see what is coming in, then select it a Junk, having set up the controls to not use Junk controls, but send mail manually chosen as Junk to Trash.

The number of times that tech support folks have tried to move me from Netscape to Explorer is pretty shocking. I'm a diehard fan. Loved your writing, you're the best...thanks!!! =^..^=
