Thunderbird Address Books Problem

Postby carolina » Mon 16 Jan, 2006 8:18 pm

I have been a Netscape user for 10 years, but I needed to update and the lack of a Netscape mail client led me to switch to Thunderbird (2 days ago). I was able to import my Netscape profiile containing several address books, saw them all in Thunderbird, but must have done something to disappear them. Now I can access only a single address book when I hit the Address Book button or select it from the tools menu. However, when writing a message, the contacts button and pane shows all address books and gives me a choice. How can I access all address books in the Address Book facility, to update, change etc. Thanks for any help.

I am using TB1.5 or 1.0.7, and they have the same address book button, and you can manage your addresses from it. I have to try hard to get a Contact sidebar. And, in the sidebar I have the choice of address books, while the Address Book management opens separately, and all address books are in a sidebar, next to the addresses. The same as it used to be.

Thunderbird Address Books Problem

Postby carolina » Tue 17 Jan, 2006 9:03 am

Thanks for the reply. My version of TB is 1.0.7, and it does have the address book button, but I cannot manage my addresses from it, rather I can only manage one set of addresses that appear in a single pane (pain?) when I click on the Address Book button or open the Address Book management from the tools menu (or use CTRL+2) .
The Contact sidebar always (so far) automatically opens when I use the WRITE button to begin composing a message. In the Contact sidebar I DO have the choice of address books: there is a choice of address books in the drop down selection line, an email address search line, and a list of the names sorted alphabetically (or by email, you choose) in the address book I have selected. BUT I CANNOT MANAGE ADDRESS BOOKS HERE, only select the addresses I want to use while composing an email.
The Address Book management DOES INDEED open separately, but I can't get the sidebar which should contain all the address books. I saw it at the beginning, the first day I used TB. but it has disappeared, and I don't know what happened. When I open Address Book Management with the Address Book button, I get a big pane with a bunch of addresses, and they are not the contents of any single address book I had - they seem a mixture.

I can't think of why you have that problem. I have had my profile since who knows when for 1.0.7, and a different profile for 1.5, much more recent. I don't recall getting the address book in any other way than by importing the different .ldif files which I had stored on my hard drive. However, I reorganized the address books, so that I have separate address books for different groups of people. My Personal Address book, is nothing more than the beginning for the other address books.

Thunderbird Address Books Problem

Postby carolina » Tue 17 Jan, 2006 5:45 pm

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid I'm repeating myself.
When I started out with TB 1.0.7 a few days ago, after using Netscape (my last version was 6.2 and it included the browser, mail client and html editor), I imported my entire mail profile stored on the hard drive from Netscape. The address books in that profile were not only Personal Address Book and Collected Addresses, but 5 other separate address books, and in the beginning the list of all 7 appeared in the sidebar on the left when I clicked on Address Book Management, so that I could choose whichever I had to work on when adding, deleting or changing address book information. I know these address books are somewhere because when I write a message, and the Contacts sidebar appears, they appear in the drop down line, and I can choose from among them.
But the entire sidebar in Address Book management has disappeared and that is what seems to be the real problem -- that and the fact that the list of addresses in the Address Book Management main pane window doesn't correspond to any one of my original address books, and not to the Personal or the Collected Addresses either. Whatever happened, the question is how do I go back to where I started from. I keep looking at the window, thinking there may be a secret button, arrow, link, something which will allow me to restore the Address Book Management window to what it originally was.
No luck. And I'm no programmer, just an end user.
Helpless and wondering whether to change software.

When you are in the "malfunctioning" addressbook window, take your mouse to the far left hand side. Does the pointer change to a horizontal-double ended arrow ?
If it does, hold down the left button and drag slightly to the right.

Just a thought.

Dear captjlddavis,
With that simple thought you have saved the day! The arrow did indeed appear! OLE object sizing, hiding, unhiding -- why I never thought of those too subtle column and window pane tools. Must have started out with windows too late in life.
So thank you for helping me to restore my Address Book Management.
What a relief!
