You don't have to back up your mail. If you have not installed TB, you will be prompted if you wish to import settings from another program. And, that should be it.
As forbacking up, your reaction is typical of people who do not know that the personal files, like those are placed in hidden folders in winXP. Take a look at this page which tells you of the location of the files/folders, and how to see them (only after you "unhide" them, you will be able to do a Search and find them).
As backup, right click|copy the entire .slt folder, and the right click|paste it in a safe place which you know. As you can see Thunderbird has a slightly different set up, but, the profiles are just as hidden.
You can keep Netscape, as long as you want, or just save some of the more important files/folders.

more questions:

i do not have the emails and netscape on my pc. they are all on another pc. i need to mail the emails to my pc here. should i

a) install netscape first and copy and paste the mail directory here, or
b) install thunderbird and copy and paste the mails here?

i am not very sure which is the .slt folder. i have "unhide" the files and folders already. but i am not sure which is which. is the "Inbox" icon (it doesn't have an extension assign to it) in the mail directory in netscape the .slt file?

I'd say that your best bet is to install Netscape first, and then copy over your mail directory.

If you're using Windows 2000 or higher on both computers, this process can be simplified a bit. Open up Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer), and type in "%APPDATA%", without the quotes, into the address bar. You'll get a list of folders -- open the one labeled "Mozilla", followed by "Profiles". Next, double-click on your Netscape profile name (usually "default", though it can be changed). There is a single folder inside this folder, so open this one folder. The resulting folder contains another folder called "Mail". Either copy this to a CD or some other media (a floppy will most likely not be able to fit all of it), or set it up as a network share.

Next, on the new computer with Thunderbird, run Thunderbird so that it will create a profile (if you haven't done so already). The first time you run it, Thunderbird will create a profile. In a similar process, open Windows Explorer and type "%APPDATA%" in the address bar. This time, go into the directory labeled "Thunderbird", then your profile name (usually "default"), then the single folder within that one. Now, just paste your old Mail directory in here. Open Thunderbird, and you should be able to see all of your Netscape mail.

Note that if you had a Netscape WebMail account, you will be able to see your old mail, but you will not be able to download new mail. The problem behind this is that Thunderbird cannot properly communicate with Netscape's mail servers.

Yes. Alternately, and probably better than Don's suggestion, is to create your account in TB, get it going. Then, right click|copy the Inbox of 7.2 (no extention), and right click|paste in the same account folder. Then, right click|rename the copy to let's say Nsinbox (anything different from Inbox), and right click|copy the renamed file, and finally right click|paste it in the Thunderbird account folder.
You should do all this with both NS and TB closed. When you open Thunderbird, you should have a Nsinbox folder where all the Netscape mail is. It is a good idea to have two folders to reduce the size of the Inbox.
however, you can move e-mails from one account to the other.
If you already use subfolders, etc., then Don's plan is simpler.
