How do I open an alleged .eml file?

Postby Fulvio » Tue 14 Feb, 2006 1:25 am

I have a problem which may be laughable to Microsoft users, But I received an e-mail from my son, with form in .eml format. I don't understand how to open that foorm. Is there any way that an .eml file can be open with any of the various Netscape/Mozilla/thunderbird programs?
What I got does not look, much like an .eml file. I cannot even get it open with OE6.
But, in case that was a proper file, how would handle it?

I don't understand exactly what you are saying ?
Is the .eml file an attachement or what ?
Did you save it to HD ?

Did you try File -> Open file and browse to it ?

I downloaded the file to the desktop, and, it came out as Forms.eml.
I was able to rename the file as .doc, and open it with Open Office, because Outlook Express6.0 did not seem to have a clue how to open the file, or do anything with the thing that I had downloaded.
After renaming the file, I was able to find out that had been send via Microsoft Exchange, and it was a forward of a forward sent as an attachment. After seeing all the text of the forwards, I was able to see that I had been, at one time, an .xml file. And, when I renamed it I got an error. So, after one hour, I shot back a "please don't do this to me message".
That is why I called it an alleged .eml file.
I was asking if it is possible to open .eml files with anything else, because I remember seeing mail which I had sent with NS6.x saved as Temp. .eml files. I don't want to bother with OE, if I can.
But, the file which I got cannot be opened by any program.

I guess that you got it...you said the it was a fwd of a fwd with an xml attchenment.

If it were a legitimate .eml file, it should open with any browser.
File -> Open file and browse to it. If that doesn't work it may be something else. I always thought that *.eml was just an mbox format file.

Fulvio: I found this question and solution regarding .eml files on another help site so I copied it and pasted it here: I hope this helps.

I have received some Columbia Space Pictures, but nothing in my computer programs can open them. They seem to be in an "EML" format. Have you any clue as to what will open and display these pictures? -- R.P., via taconic.net.
The doctor wishes Microsoft had chosen a less puzzling method of saving mail in its standard-issue e-mail software, Outlook Express. When an Outlook Express user saves mail without considering the option of saving as text, Outlook Express stores the mail as an EML document. If all the world used Outlook Express, a proprietary format would not matter. But the world is full of Outlook Express refugees who would never return to such a dangerous program, so the doc recommends the simple method of saving the images in e-mail messages as JPEGs. They can then be stored or passed along by e-mail.

Thanks, but it does not apply to me, unless a form can be displayed as a text file.
I, even got so far as setting up the account in Outlook Express. When I click to open it, Windows askes me which program I want to use. Does it look like it is a proper .eml file. If I open with anything else, I am getting the same results as opening with Wordpad. I seem to have gotten in the ".eml" file the same thing which I see Inline, with Thunderbird, i.e. the text of the forward, with a header of everyone it was sent to, and, at the end a separate section with code. I never saw an .xml attachment, but I could tell, by reading the text that it was some .xml. Internet Explorer told me that there was an error, and the file could not be open using stylesheets.
The problem is that I am dealing with an attachment which is called .eml, and sometimes in the past, an e-mail may have contained an .xml file.
Anyway, I asked to send anything which open by one of the people in the forward. This is the first time that I could not get the file to open by anything, including the Microsoft programs.

Fulvio: here is another site that has a fix, although I do not know if it applies to your situation. You are probably already aware of this because are much more knowledgeable than I am concerning computer issues, but just in case, here is a link:

It is a good link, but, i am not interested to mess with OE, if I can help it. I was able to decipher enough of the e-mail that I saw that there was a problem with the very last, and critical part. But, I could tell that it should have been a Word documents. I don't have Word, but OpenOffice has, always dealt very nicely with any type of file.
I was, also, able to extract the e-mail address of the person who originated the document. And, I e-mail her, explaining the situation.
I will what happens. If not, I will try your fix.

Guess what? There was no attachment in the original, although the forward came as an attachment. That attachment was no more than a forward of a forward. I was able to get hold of the person who initiated this mess, and was told that no attachment was being sent on e-mail, for security reason. But they could FAX or mail. So much for a nono-problem!
