Password File Location

Postby humpd » Sat 25 Feb, 2006 11:13 am

Somehow, I have lost all of my password information in Firefox. They are all still there in SeaMonkey. What I want to do is copy the passwords from SeaMonkey and paste them into Firefox. Can this be done and, if so, where do I find those files in each browser setup? Thanks.

Windows 7, Norton Internet Security, Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster for my desktop and Avast for the laptop, user of Chrome and Firefox 9.01.

If I'm not mistaken, password files (which are *.s files in your profile) are keyed to a specific account. You can try copying the file out of your Seamonkey profile (which can be accessed from [tt]%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Profiles\(profile name)\*.slt\[/tt]) and into your Firefox profile (which can be accessed from [tt]%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(profile name)\default.*\[/tt]). I have a strange feeling, though, that this method won't work due to the password being keyed.

If you don't have too many passwords, or if you have some time on your hands, you can choose to show your passwords in Seamonkey by going to Tools -> Password Manager -> Manage Stored Passwords, and then selecting "Show Passwords". From there, just re-authenticate yourself at all of the sites you had passwords saved for.

Passwords in my ailing Firefox1.0.7 profile, and in that of 1.5 are in the signons.txt file. The passwords are encrypted.
Seamonkey's .s file has, also, encrypted passwords, but all in a single, interminable line.
Just for the heck of it, I made a copy of the .s file, and, renamed it signons.txt, after the usual protests from Windows. I will not attempt to see if it works, because I have enough problems with 1.0.7, but you can attempt to copy/paste the renamed file from Seamonkey. I had placed the file outside the Seamonkey .slt. If you don't have any in FF, you have nothing to lose.
I copied the file from the 1.0.7 profile, and pasted into the next 1.0.8 nightly profile, and it works like a charm.

Password file in Seamonkey = <number>.s
Password in Firefox = signons.txt

Each one is associated with the:
key3.db file within the same profile.

You must copy BOTH files from SM to FF. (key3.db and <number>.s
and then edit the:
signon.SignonFileName entry to match the filename you have.

ie.
If you copied 12345678.s from SM to FF, edit the value of:
signon.SignonFileName to 12345678.s (via config editor or prefs,js file)
OR
Rename 12345678.s to signons.txt.
They just have to match, whatever you may choose to call them.

at least that is how I think it works.
