opera is a virus...

Postby notafanofopera » Tue 05 Jun, 2007 7:57 pm

...plain and simple. i don't care how well it works. i don't care how user friendly it is. i don't care if it is the program that saves the world. the fact is, it was somehow installed on my computer that no one else has access. it just "showed up". i saw another thread on this forum of someone else having the same complaint. this is how a virus works. this is ridiculous. regardless of how "great" this program may become, it WILL get bad reviews from me as long as it is around. i cannot get rid of it. it is not in my applications folder. spotlight and finder cannot find it. HORRIBLE. i did not download this. it's horrible. if i go to open a torrent file with the "open with" option, not only do i have this "opera" option that i never installed, i have 2 OF THEM (9.10 and 9.20). this is the worst publicity campaign i can imagine. here's one person that will never like the program because of the way the company has gone about getting it out there. if another person on this board is having the same problem i am, then there has got to be others.

does anyone know how this program gets here? anyone know how to get rid of it? i want those "options" on my "open with" tab to NOT be there. i can't get rid of them. there they are, but i cannot find them anywhere on my computer. RIDICULOUS.

Do you have Adobe Photoshop (or any other Adobe applications) installed on your computer?
Chances are Adobe Photoshop uses Opera as the help file engine.

I have only a couple of other messages which were as far out in left field as the original one.
Who knows, may be someone has come up with a virus for Macs. I have, always had to do some work to get the installation file, which would be of the type: Opera_9.21_Eng_Setup.exe
My computer has two Opera directories, but only one shows that it is installed, i.e. the latest, or 9.21. I have an Opera8 directory with remnants from previous versions.
As for Photoshop, there is a plugin for it in Opera, but that does not mean that Photoshop installed Opera.
But, again, I doon't use Macs.

Postby zhuliye » Wed 21 Nov, 2007 11:07 am

I have a mac as well and the same thing happened with Opera. Tried to update the new transmission, but the next time i tried downloading a bittorrent, opera popped open. Ive never seen it before or ever downloaded it. Now i cant get rid of it either. The folders, but not the application show up in a search.

Bob - Have you reported this to Opera on their forums?? If it's legit, it sounds like something they ought to look into.
